  • Thesis project(MH/H)

Hi, I'm a journalism student at DCU and I'm doing my thesis. It's about army men and women who have served abroad (ie Lebanon etc) and I'd like to get in touch with them. If anyone has any ideas or fall into the above categories please let me know.

    cheers
    Robert

what type of stuff are you looking for

There is a guy in Cork called Neo Coveney has served everywhere

      Boo. Hiss...Journo etc.

You'll find the DF is reluctant to allow its members to take part in this thesis directly(they are forbidden from discussing their activities with the media without the consent of DFPO). However if you contact DF HQ directly they could give you a few pointers. There has been much printed in the past of individuals experiences with the UN overseas. Perhaps you could consider these as research material before going straight in looking for an interview? Much of the Hard work will have already been done. Also visit the Collins Barracks Museum. some of the staff there are former DF members too, they might be able to help you out.

in all seriousness there are very strict guidelines in

informally communicating or even formally communicating with

the media unless you have the ministers permission

that goes for every member of teh Defence Forces

unless your the COS - then the DFR's dont actually seem to apply to you

Hes a student doing a project not... "The Media"...

Maybe if you explain what you are looking for some people might be a bit more forthcoming e.g. Do you want to know about incidents, daily routine etc.? Try An Cosantoir, the DF journal (can we call it that?) its in my college library anyway, could be in DIT's.

thanks for the feedback. more specifically i'm writing 5 profile pieces. i'm looking for detailed experiences - why they joined, where they went, what they had to do on a daily basis and what they have done since. i'm hoping that each profile will look at a different overseas mission. so each one will also give some good background on the conflicts. that's the plan at the moment. I've already been in touch with ONE and UNIVA as well as a gentleman at Cathal Brugha Barracks. I've got to go in and talk to both of the army organisations but i wasn't planning on approaching the defence forces for reasons outlined by others here. however if that came up, someone who has recently been abroad, obvisouly i wouldn't turn it down.

              thanks
