Trust RTÉ to mess it up!

Cabin Fever, the ship involved in RTÉ's reality TV series, has broken up after running aground on rocks off Tory Island.

All those who were on board are safe and well. Most were airlifted off, but one swam ashore to Tory Island.

It had been hoped that a high tide at 5.50pm would enable the captain to refloat the ship.

The Aer Corps rescue helicopter from Finner camp in Donegal earlier dropped a portable pump on board the ship.

The Arranmore Lifeboat was trying to attach a rope to the vessel to attempt to pull it off the rocks but the operation proved difficult and it was feared the ship had been damaged beneath the waterline.

A spokesperson for Coco Productions, who make the programme for RTÉ, said that the main thing is that no-one was hurt.

Cabin Fever issued a distress call at 1:30 this afternoon and the Arranmore Lifeboat and Aer Corps Helicopter were launched.

A live programme had been planned from Sligo on Monday night but Coco Productions said the situation is fluid and they are monitoring it.

They do, it's on it's way from England right now.
I wonder who has to pay for the last one- RTÉ or the company that was making the program for RTÉ??

Here's another case of poor DF PR.

Where Air Corps or Naval Service are involved in a rescue, this should be made known to the public via their website and similar. Most of the work done in this regard won't make the news, even though lives and property are saved.

The DF can't complain about a poor public profile, if no effort is made to make the public aware of the good workthey do.

From reading many of the newspaper reports, it would seem that the two experienced people on board (the owner and skipper) were below decks at the time of the incident. It also seems that the two people on watch at the time had no sailing experience. Anyone who has sailed around this part of Ireland (Donegal, Tory Island) knows how treacherous these waters are. A bit silly to leave two unexperienced people all alone on watch!!!!! What do you navy guys think?? No inexperienced sailor (or newbie) is ever left alone on watch by themselves??

Sorry IMF didn't read the other posts. Thought to post the thread here seeing it's a naval matter. i.e. regarding the sea or ships

They should send the cast of the cabin fever off to treasure Island. The only reason they went with the idea of the boat was they wanted to save money, ha ha ha well done RTE.

Latest news is that the participants are to sue RTE. For stress and trauma apparently...all this because they were incompetant and unsupervised aboard a quite complex and technical vessel. Anyone who has sailed anything larger than a dinghy will know these things need an experienced hand...

However, did this inompetence lead to the sinking of the vessel? They all done survival at sea training, they were literally within walking distance of shore and nobody got hurt...indeed one waded to Tory. Why sue RTE? They should be sued for coming up with crap tv,but there is no way you can say the boat sinking was their fault, instead it was the fault of whoever was navigwating at the time, and who decided to make the trip in poor weather. Something that annoyed me watching the show was when fat security guard(not me..) argued that it would have been easier to take a straight line course to a destination than the one taken....shortest distance between 2 points at sea however,is not necessarily a straight line.

I look forward to RTE's next attempt at reality TV,when in the same ethos as cabin fever, they send 10 factory workers to Israel to keep the peace between the Israelis and the Palestinians..

It will be followed by a visit to Florida where 10 accountants will learn to build a supersonic jet,and circumnavigate the globe..participants will be voted off weekly and dropped off using HALO.

And for childrens TV,10 pre school children are shown into a room with 10 loaded pistols....those who survive win free access to a counsellor for life...

The only logical evolution for reality t.v. is a Running Man-type program where 'contestants' are hunted down & killed live on air for our amusement.

I see the NS have had a big involvement in the last few weeks, with the ship being "boarded" and searched for contraband 2 weeks ago,and again tonight, there was more involvement. I saw one of the contestants stripping a steyr..
Good on whoevers idea it was to keep the NS in the public eye for good reasons.
