  • Battle of Bazentin

Dawn on 14th July 1916 saw the opening of the second phase of the Battle of the Somme- The Battle for Bazentin Ridge. The 2nd Bn of the Royal Irish Regiment, was part of 22nd Bde, 7th Division. The 7th was tasked with the capture of the two villages of Bazentin le Petit and Bazentin le Grand.. 22nd Bde was the divisional reserve and was located in Mametz wood, the scene of an unsuccessful assault by the 2nd Royal Irish on July 5th.

Flat Iron Copse was held by 20th Bde, 7th Division, while the Divisions assaulting Battalions- 2nd Border Regt and 9th Devons. were 200 metres in front of Caterpillar Wood. These battalions assaulted and captured a German salient named the Snout, and then moved onto the German first and second lines.

At 0425hrs 20th Bde captured and consolidated Bazentin le Grand Wood. The 2nd Bn Royal Warickshire Regt of the 22nd Bde passed through the wood and covered the Royal Irish advance on Bazentin le Petit.

By 0630hrs the Royal Irish had reached the southern edge of the village and, reinforced by the 6th Bn Leicestershire Regt, were in possession of the whole village by 0730hrs. By 0830 hrs the Royal Irish were pushed back from the northern end of the village by a German counter-attack. Later in the day they recaptured the whole village with the assistance of 2nd Bn Gordon Highlanders.

2nd Bn Royal Irish Regt Casualties on 14th July 1916 from my locality were.

6368 Pte Thomas Riordan from Carrick on Suir, Co Tipperary and 7366 Pte Michael Sinnott from Cappoquin Co. Waterford. Both of them are commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial.
