"Poland Will Send Soldiers to Chad: Defense Minister
    By REUTERS, WARSAW

Polish soldiers will join a proposed European Union mission in Chad aimed at protecting refugees trapped in the violent region bordering Darfur, Defence Minister Aleksander Szczyglo said on Aug. 23.

Under a proposal from U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, the EU force would protect civilians, humanitarian workers and the U.N. mission in Chad, which is facing an influx of tens of thousands of refugees from neighboring Darfur.

The force -- seen by EU diplomats as comprising 1,500-3,000 troops -- would also work in the Central African Republic to try to block the transit of armed groups between Sudan and Chad.

"I have taken a decision to start preparations of our troops for a possible mission in Chad, which could start as early as this autumn or at the beginning of next year," Szczyglo told Reuters in an interview.

If Ban’s plan goes ahead, it would complement the dispatch of up to 26,000 U.N. and African Union troops and police to Darfur, which has been locked in a four-year conflict.
EU foreign ministers are expected to make a final decision on the force in mid September.
Szczyglo said the timing of the mission had yet to be set but diplomats say EU member state troops could go in October at the earliest. Poland has soldiers on foreign missions in Iraq, Afghanistan, Lebanon, Syria, Kosovo and Bosnia-Herzegovina."

As people may have heard on the news, the current DCOS Ops, Maj Gen Pat Nash, will be Operation Commander - presumably sitting in Europe somewhere and that there will also be a Force Commander who will actually be on the ground.

EU Chad force will be led by Irish general

AN IRISH general is to take charge of the new EU peace force in Chad.

The Government yesterday approved the appointment of Major General Pat Nash (above) as the operational commander of the mission.
General Nash, who is currently number two in the military chain of command, will be based in Paris. He will be promoted to the rank of lieutenant general for the duration of his one-year stint as commander.

The move will create a vacancy at major general rank at home and this is expected to be filled by the Government within the next month.
The 4,000-strong force, which will include about 350 Irish peacekeeping troops, is likely to move into Chad and the Central African Republic by the end of November.
A reconnaissance group from the Defence Forces is being sent to Chad tomorrow week for seven days and will report back to Defence Minister Willie O'Dea.
          Troops
Its report will determine the number of troops to be supplied by the Defence Forces and the role they will play there.
A request for an Irish operational commander was relayed to yesterday's Cabinet meeting by Mr O'Dea who said afterwards that the move was further recognition of the high regard in which the Irish troops and officers were held across the world.
He said it was a very prestigious post and underlined the standing of the Defence Forces in the field of peace support operations generally and the scale of the proposed contribution to this particular operation.
The minister described General Nash as eminently well qualified to serve in his new role as he had an impressive career as a peacekeeper.

Not likely since there'd be some going in the opposite direction aswell.

It was on the radio jetjock - there was an interview with an army officer, and he mentioned that number - was just looking for someone to expand on it...

Before anyone starts moaning about "in the public domain" and other such stuff, it may well be, but it sounds a lot like operational info to me so it's not staying on this forum.

                            Sunday Indo ...

IMO article reads as very anti-DF

There used to be part of the UN website that said units had to arrive with X amount of ammo based on consumption rates for training at home, but can't find it now.

Lad it was said on the radio that they might have to bring up 12.7 million rounds of ammo out there with them on account of the fact that Chad has approx 400km of paved roads. in other words resupply not a viable option.

If you have to XX.X the figures go ahead but the other guy was right it was said on the radio.
