  • Army pay

    Just curious about something.

Given the escalating cost of living, how many of the RDF personell would give up their civvie employment for a PDF career.

I'm talking on a financial level here, i'm not questioning anyone's dedication to the RDF/PDF.

          No way!
From a financial view only, I get a bonus, an increment and a share of the company's profits every year and also other benefits/perks I won't go into. The army could not pay me as much and also the payscales are related to a rank structure i.e. I need to make captain or I don't get a new car etc.
I'm proud of being in the RDF but I'm equally proud if not prouder of my civilian occupation/status after all it took me 5 years of third level and crappy summer jobs to get where I am today.

Personally I'd end up taking a small dip in wages but to be a full time officer I'd jump at the chance.

Having done nearly 15 years in the RDF, I would go in if those 15 would count as full time service for pension purposes, so I do six years and get a full pension at 36 - yeah thats an option. The drop in pay would not be huge when you add on the myriad allowances.

Those six years would almost guarantee foreign service too....anyone know where I can apply?

What myriad allowances ?Must be a different army to what i'm in!!Just to clarify a point there,Officers pay is somewhat shite too,a lot of them get it up their nose 'cos a mere Cpl can change his car more often than they can:D But the pay is still shite in relation to all the shit that you put up with & the fact that we're acutely understrength,so a lot of "double-jobbing" goes on

I have to admit to being a little surprised here. With the exception of the people who want to be Ruperts (thats officers for those of you not in the know) I'm surprised at what some people perceive the level of pay to be.
The reason i started this thread is this. Currently the DF cannot hold onto qualified people because of pay. Its not a new problem but one that they have never tried to rectify. Once again my anonomus friend Erwin is on the money. Army pay is shite compared to most civvie employments (including officers pay which dosent become respectable until you have been a captain for two years).
Its all well and good to want to be a career soldier, but belive me a mortage in dublin will soon make you wake up to some financial reality.
I loved being a soldier. It wasnt a job to me, it was a career choice I made when I was 18. I gave it 12 years of my life and when i decided to leave finance was one of the major considerations for my decision. Career, professional soldiers should not have to leave their career because they cant afford to live on the salary, and unfortunatley that is the position i was in.

Is this a phrase commonly used in the DF? I've only ever heard it before in relation to the British Army.

O.k. the data is a year out of date so you'll just have to remember what pay you were on last year for a comparison but it is quite apparent that the pay is crap and what's more your salary is public knowledge and not dependent on you personal performance merely length of service.

You have to remember as well that the pay will go a lot further depending on where you live. €30k a year in Donegal will go a lot further than €30k if you are stationed in Dublin
