September 3rd 1916 saw the 16th Irish Division engaged in the capture of Guillemont on the Somme. Less than a week later the survivors will be committed again to capture the nearby village of Ginchy. The Somme battle has been raging for two months now and has another two to run. The 16th Division is commemorated on the Somme by a Celtic cross which stands beside the Church in Guillemont.
