Could someone explain the difference between un peace keeping and peace enforcement ? Has the army been involved in peace enforcement ?

I am just curious, is peace enforcement a more robust type of role for the army? Have been looking at the discussion on the army serving in afghanistan, would peace enforcement be a stepping stone for any potential deployments to an afghan type deployment ?Every man thinks meanly of himself for not having been a soldier - Samuel Johnson

The UN operates a number of different types of missions:
Observer - unarmed officers who will monitor a situation and negotiate locally (eg UNTSO - Middle East)
Peacekeeping - generally lightly armed & equipped force (eg UNIFIL I in Lebanon (the days before the last lot of fighting))
Peace Enforcement - better armed & equipped force (eg MINURCAT in Chad)
The difference is in the Mandate (basically a directive) from the UN Security Council. In a nut shell:
Peacekeeping - you can fire in self defence
Peace Enforcement - you can use "all necessary means" to get peace (that includes firing first)
The rules of engagement will vary from mission to mission and from contingent to contingent - ROEs will not be discussed here as it is an operational matter (unless they are already in the public domain).

Was not the first U.N. Congo Mission (O.N.U.C.) back in the 1960's
not peace enforcement as well?
I have seen it referred to as a "Blue Helmet Mission" as opposed to a "Blue Beret Mission".
