NS leaks

Just to underline how important replacement of the P20 class is, I read yesterday in the Irish Examiner that a hole the size of a 10c coin was discovered below the waterline on L.E. Emer's hull, while she was in drydock for scheduled maintenance.

Luckily the location of this hole did not put the vessel or it's crew in any danger, however, it does demonstrate that she is no longer at her best and overdue for replacement.

Most likely it was on part of the hull which would otherwise not be visible inboard, such as behind tanks or Bilges or even around the prop shaft area. There are plenty of void spaces not normally accessable by crew for visual inspection.

They would then have noticed the water pouring out....

Speaking to dockyard workers in Cobh earlier, a survey revealed thing are much worse than initially believed.

Pitting, corosion along sharp or narrow wdges (bilge) etc?

It's common enough. She might have been corroding from the inside out. A ballest tank perhaps, where it might have been inpossible to apply a suitable protective coating. A small leak here could go unnoticed for a long time, with no adverse effects.

Chain locker would get dogs abuse, to be fair.

Plus it probably has a drain hole in it anyway! lol

Wouldn't worry about it to much....water in ships is nothing new..hence the use of bilge pumps.

I'm not worried about it at all. Almost born on water! Just interesting to find out what goes wrong. I find it useful to log it in the memory for maybe future reference

Spending 31 years getting hammered by everything the Atlantic(and Mediterranean) throws at it doesn't help the health of the steel plating either.
