There was a thread about this on MP.net, (Now much changed due to deletion of OPSEC comments) the videos appear to be from Al Jazzera Sources,

and in reality do not reflect the truth with regards the Merkava and its capabilities, NO Tank is 100% proof against attack, either from the newest R.P.G. type weapons or hugh buried I.E.D.'s.

But the vehicle still continues to give very good protection to its crews and passengers, and is well suited to Israels current needs.

      Connaught Stranger.

I agree. The Merkava is still a serious tank and an occasional success against it doesn't make it useless overnight. If you look at Abrams losses in Iraq, then the Merkava has nothing to be ashamed of.

It is well engineered piece of equipment but as said in the documentary "tanks should be used to fight tanks".
The main failure is in where it is chosen to deploy. Remember Blitzkrieg does not work in downtown.

Look to Chechnya for a recent example in how tanks don't work against mobile groups in an urban environment

On one side a few tanks destroyed and a few more temporarily out operation, countless dead attackers the other side.

The first time around, the Russians just sent in tanks using the worst possible tactics one could come up with. That's the event you reference.

The second time around, they overwhelmingly beat the crap out of the Chenyans, they just used their armour more intelligently. Even in town, fifty tons of steel with a big feck-off gun is going to be a tough nut to crack and provides a capability nothing else does.

One of the main problems encountered was attack by RPGs from 4th and 5th floor windows ( to attack the topside armour), above the max elevation of main guns. Their answer was to deploy ZSU 23 and 2K22 Tunguska with their higher elevating weapons when deploying armour in urban areas.

Backblast isn't going to be a factor if someone is firing from the roof or a gutted building.Ask some of your IRA buddies how they learned to cope with backblast.

Sorry. Meant the first battle of Grozny in the first war in the example I mentioned. Should've made that clearer.

Looks like the back blast problem is well on it's way to being solved.

I thought the modern German Panzerfaust III had solved it, by blowing a mass of plastic pellets out of the back?
