    A boarding party from the LE Niamh was used in a detention operation today. The vessel "Minchos Septimo" is Spanish registered and was boarded and detained approx. 100 miles south of the Fashnet Rock. The ship was detained for alleged fishing violations.

    The vessel is at present being escorted by the LE Niamh to Castletownbere. This will be the third detention of the year for the Naval Service.

    The Naval Service is the maritime component of the Defence Forces with its HQ in Haulbowline Island, Cork. The LE Niamh was commissioned in 2001 and has 47 men and women on board. Her main armament is a 76mm OTO MELARA compact gun and is 78.8m in length.
