  • Israeli storming of Blockade Runner

Just wondering what the thoughts of the Navy Heads are on the Israeli decision to storm a large ship with over 500 activist passegers on board.

Given that the activists were likely to be antagonistic (At least) to the presence of Israeli military personal taking over the ship and given the number of them on board and also the size of the ship it would seem to me like a very foolish decision to undertake this task in the first place.

Is this opinion correct? Would a team (Or indeed several teams) of commando's attacking via RIB's and Helicopters ever have had a realistic chance of subduing such a large and heavily populated vessel without loss of life?

Agreed. It was unlikely to have had a friendly outcome. The israelis were insane to allow such a small number of soldiers board what was known to be filled with passengers whose motivation would be hostile, at best towards to State of Israel.

They should have picked the cargo ships instead.

Catch-22 says they have a right to do anything we can't stop them from doing.

If anyone on here has any experience with fast roping from heli's, what did they make of the initial infil of troops?

On video itself, it seemed to be rather slow but as someone who has never fast roped from a heli I wouldn't really know what is deemed fast or slow. It just seemed to take an awfully long time to get a decent amount of troops on the ground, especially considering the situation on the deck.

Should they not have stayed on their own naval ships and ordered them to follow them to port or if they did not a few shots across the bows would change minds, that way no one would have been hurt.

Check this link on Sky News where it shows the troops being attacked with iron bars and chairs as they came down the ropes.

As a matter of interest if any of the guys on the boat had secured the ropes they came down on to the ship what would have been the outcome for the helicopters or do they have quick release connections.

The helis would have just dumped the ropes. Form the looks of it, it's SOPs for most

            Hi Murph,
Nice picture on today's UK Independent of an Israeli sailor manning an old-style 20mm Oerlikon.

Fastroping is done from a moving platform (heli); in the case of a ship being the tgt, you are descending from one moving platform to another, independently moving, tgt.
Add to that the small size of the deck area, plus the fact it was crowded (with angry people on top of that) and you get a complicated insertion.

The Israelis obviously expected light, mostly verbal, opposition, but found themselves the targets of very violent attacks. The commander of the troop involved, who was the second man down the rope, ended up being thrown one deck down after being stabbed in the abdomen with a knife.

Personally, I reckon the Israeli's were damned whatever action they took. Use ships to steer the other boats to a port, excuse will be that they were unarmed and only sending in aid to combat the "Illegal siege". If they fired shots, its firing on unarmed civies. (we know what happened there)

could have been handled better though for sure. How, I dont know.
I knew a simple soldier boy.....
Who grinned at life in empty joy,
Slept soundly through the lonesome dark,
And whistled early with the lark.

In winter trenches, cowed and glum,
With crumps and lice and lack of rum,
He put a bullet through his brain.
And no one spoke of him again.

You smug-faced crowds with kindling eye
Who cheer when soldier lads march by,
Sneak home and pray you'll never know
The hell where youth and laughter go.

                        Indeed.

If it does happen, hopefully cooler heads will prevail.

can't see the Turks getting involved to that level. they don't really need to get into a heavy duty situation with Israel given they are trying to prove their own moderacy to the EU as they are still looking for member ship.

Bad enough the situation with Greece over Cyprus but an escalation of this with Israel to a shooting match would really wreck their chances.

The Rachael Corrie I reckon will develop some more technical problems and will have to pull in some where and her cargo will be off loaded and taken by road to Gaza.

Israel will be doing everything it can to avoid more confrontation but trying to save face at the same time.

I've just been reading this from the online news page of Turkish newspaper Hurriyet.

organizers of an aid flotilla to Gaza that was attacked by Israeli navy on Monday, said they lost contact with the Gaza-bound last boat, MV Rachel Corrie, on Friday just as they are seeking to delay the latest bid to bust the embargo with an aid-laden ship.

The ship had been on course for arrival in the Palestinian enclave on Saturday, just five days after Israeli commandos killed nine Turkish activists aboard a Gaza-bound aid flotilla in a botched raid that plunged Israel into a diplomatic crisis.

"The situation is we lost all contact with the boat. We assume this was sabotage by the Israelis," said Audrey Bomse of the Free Gaza Movement.

It was now unclear whether the Irish and Malaysian activists aboard the ship would turn around or steam on towards the Hamas-run Gaza which is under a crippling blockade Israel says aims at halting Palestinian rocket fire.

The 15 crew aboard the "Rachel Corrie" have promised to offer no resistance, and will lay down on deck amidships if boarded.

It seems those on board the initial ship did not have the same intent....
