    For Queen and Country

    Watch:

    Next on:

Monday, 21:00 on BBC One (except Scotland)

    Synopsis

Documentary following the Grenadier Guards as they prepare to lead the 2010 Trooping the Colour. But these men have had precious little time to prepare; as fighting soldiers, they have just spent six months on the front line in Afghanistan's Helmand Province.
Trooping the Colour is one of the greatest ceremonial events on earth. It's a dazzling occasion, but this is an event that's far more than pageantry; at the roots of the ceremony are discipline and survival.
The ceremony is based on the tradition of carrying, or 'trooping', the Colour - or flag - of the regiment through the ranks of soldiers, clearly visible above the smoke and dust of battle, rallying the men. This year it falls upon 1st Battalion Grenadier Guards to perform this prestigious role.
This is the story of how one and a half thousand men and women join together to create one of the greatest military ceremonies on earth. It is a ceremony with just one standard: Excellence

There was one guy in a very fancy uniform sitting on a horse beside Lizzie

          with only the one Medal

          Whats the story there RGJ

Phil the Greek looked pretty fresh for an 89 year old! Funny story he was telling about meeting Liz's dad doing some gardening wearing the bearskin to get used to it before the parade. Also how his view through bearskin of all parades in the last 50 odd years have seemed like he was watching it in a thunderstorm.

              Gas Man Phil.

When HM is sitting on her throne /podium viewing the parade

the lads standing beside the podium

over her right shoulder (blessed be that shoulder) is a fairly senior looking bloke

in a dark uniform - he doesnt look to be a member of the Guards Regt

                    he has only one medal-

How do you get that senior and only have the one medal

Have been told about an 87 year old Grenadier Guardsman over the past month. Going through a tough time of it but he doesn't show it. Still as proud in the Guards and interested in the display as he was when he was doing it.

These men really are the Greatest Generation

                      I salute you Sir!

Could be an officer of the Blues and Royals - what headdress was he wearing?

                          Havent a clue Baz

it was merely the fact that he couldnt make a jingly jangly noise when he walked

I was wondering how he got that far without chest decorations

i'd have to see it myself to give you a valid comment Hedge - i can view it on iPlayer but i didn't see it when i looked first time.

and all of our medals are 'Court Mounted' so they never 'jingle jangle' anyhow!
