  • Ocelot revealed as Snatch replacement

The Ministry of Defence has announced that a vehicle partially designed by Formula 1 engineers is to replace the controversial Snatch Land Rover.

The British-designed Ocelot has a V-shaped shell intended to defend against attacks coming from below the carriage.

The patrol vehicle can also be easily dismantled if needs be.

Its wheels work independently of each other; this means it is less of a problem if one falls off as the others would continue to work.

All the components can be removed easily - meaning that the pod where up to six people can sit can be changed and the vehicle could be turned into an ambulance if required.

It was devised by engineers from a variety of backgrounds - including the World Rally Championship, McLaren F1 and BMW, and the creators say tests show the vehicle can easily be repaired in confined forward operating bases.

When will it be in full production though?

I' ll bet the designers weren't under live fire at the time, all the same....

The LPPV has been designed to provide unprecedented levels of blast protection for a vehicle of its size, and will be able to carry a crew of up to six people. It will add to the wide array of protected vehicles already being used on operations in Afghanistan, including Mastiff and Ridgback.

"The LPPV will offer huge benefit to troops in Afghanistan, as well as being a valuable asset to the Armed Forces in the future."

i've heard it's a great bit of kit and i've seen it perform off-road at the Driver Training Area here in Aldershot.

another welcome addition to the British Army's fleet of protected vehicles.

can't be much worse than a Snatch with full protection.

It must be said, I have never seen a four-wheel vehicle which had a wheel blown off which was particularly suitable to drive. Even if it happened to be the 'right' wheel, the axle with less than 50% of the weight, the first corner/acceleration/brake would roll the truck body to the ground.

we were after a small Lightweight Protected Vehicle, we already have the Heavyweight's in Mastiff and Ridgeback. adding more wheels would defeat the purpose.

besides - no matter how many wheels you have you - sometimes it's just not your day:

the Ocelot is a brilliant addition to any battalions fleet - highly mobile and very well protected, a great little battle-taxi.

Any vehicle that leave the crew walk away as in the photo above is the right vehicle.

Hope you haven't mentioned this to any of the manufacturers they seem to home in on this as selling point, although when you do take your opinion on board , you have a very valid point.
