  • Royal Navy's new Ice Breaker named

The Royal Navy's new Antarctic patrol vessel was officially named as HMS Protector at a ceremony in Portsmouth this week.

The Royal Navy's new ice patrol ship enters Portsmouth as MV Protector under the Norwegian flag on 23 May 2011

HMS Protector will fulfil HMS Endurance's role as the Navy's ice patrol ship for an interim period, and has been leased on a three-year contract from Norwegian company GC Rieber Shipping. The vessel entered Portsmouth Naval Base for the first time last week as MV Protector.

HMS Protector will be formally commissioned into the Royal Navy's fleet in a ceremony on 23 June 2011 and will deploy on the Navy's Antarctic task in November, serving in the region for the 2011-12 austral summer. Meanwhile the long-term future of HMS Endurance is being considered.

it doesn't look like it could break much ice either - i suppose it is only an 'interim' solution.

No hangar is the main issue. They had to move the helipad from atop the Bridge, to aft.
While she will be able to operate a heli, she can't keep it when heading south. Its a huge capability loss. However, this does encourage the RN to get Endurance back in service. However in the long term, the RN would do well to build the next Ice patrol ship itself, rather than buying something civvy off the shelf. That said, the Canadian effort for their arctic waters is hitting trouble already as it is neither icebreaker or warship.

Indeed, apart from the absence of the Lynx there's nowhere to store the crew's mountain bikes. :-)
