  • New protective clothing bound for British Soldiers

The final phase of the MOD's pelvic protection system will be issued to troops on the front line in Afghanistan in the next few months along with a new Personal Clothing System.

The Pelvic Protection System is designed to mitigate the effects of explosions on the front line. With Tiers One and Two already in use, the third and final phase of the system will provide additional support to balance personnel's personal safety with the necessary comfort and manoeuvrability they need to undertake operations.

Tier One is worn as underwear, manufactured from scientifically-tested ballistic silk that provides an initial level of protection to mitigate against the effects of blasts, including shrapnel:

Tier Two is a second layer of detachable pelvic body armour, worn by troops when carrying out higher risk tasks outside the wire:

The final tier of the system consists of ballistic knee-length shorts, designed for use by troops whose roles demand greater levels of protection on patrol - such as those operating the lead metal detector in teams searching for Improvised Explosive Devices:

All three tiers integrate with the rest of troops' personal kit, which has now been redesigned specifically to be worn with body armour.

excellent news, meaning our troops are some of the best protected in the world in this type of combat environment and horrific injuries should be reduced.

my unit are already issued and wearing the Personal Combat System MTP Combat Uniform and it's excellent - these extra levels of protection will go a long way to providing that extra protection when things go badly wrong.

    At last, bulletproof underpants.

Catch-22 says they have a right to do anything we can't stop them from doing.

Any reports on how it is to wear/weighs/affects mobility?

i only wear the new PCS and won't actually see Tier 3 protection for a while but i doubt it - particularly as the PCS pockets are now angled with the opening more forward on your thigh.

the admin panel on the Osprey and bicep pockets on the PCS will have to suffice.

The issued bomb pants or "tier one" were actually gleaming. However, the bomb nappy (tier 2) was a bit of a hindrance on patrol, sometimes your junk would get caught in the side of it and you'd hurt yourself with every step I found.
But as much as we bitched about it, it soon stopped when we saw that the kit worked out there. One lads testicles were saved in an IED blast.

I haven't worn tier 3, I don't envy the boys using it in the Summer anyway.

thanks for sharing your personal experiences with the kit Keef, it's obviously saving lives and vital body parts.

Since teir 2 and 3 are worn over your trousers, why not just make teir 2 and 3 into your trousers? reducing the layers you have to wear and pockets could then be added to the outside to retain the full functionality of your normal combat trousers.

because you don't / won't always need Tier 2 and 3 - easier to bolt it on when you need it than have it on there all of the time even when you don't.

Tier 2 would not be used when riding in the back of a Mastiff or stagging on in a Sangar for example.

Tier 3 will only usually be used by the point man in each section.

PCS is a modular combat uniform made up of layers that can be built up and stripped down as required.
