        A wild guess - size ? Or maybe composition ?

          Wasn't the first unit in Liberia a motor battalion?

            There is a load of Units missing,

            for example;

            Camp Command Cyprus

            SFOR

            EUFOR

            Whatever it is now FOR

            EUMM
            Things fall apart; the centre cannot hold;
            Mere anarchy is loosed upon the world,
            The blood-dimmed tide is loosed, and everywhere***
            The ceremony of innocence is drowned;
            The best lack all conviction, while the worst
            Are full of passionate intensity.

                If it's like us, a Battalion is just that; an Infantry Group (or a Battle Group for us) is a fighting force consisting of an Infantry Battalion and attached sub-units (Armour, Arty, Engineers, CIMIC, Logs etc...) all under command of the Inf Batt CO.

                  Maybe I should have named the thread Major Irish Troop Contribution Missions Overseas 1960 -2011

                    in the case of KFOR, an inf gp was basically an inf coy with a logs coy and a HQ element etc.

                    basically think of a Bn consisting of only 1 inf coy but with the necessary support assets indigenous.

                    I think the total strengths in KFOR Inf Gps was around 220 pers but I may be a little off so I stand to be corrected.

                    UNIFIL 1 Bns were in the region 600 and MINURCAT Bns were a little over 410.

                      Its simple.Unit size greater than a Coy but less than a Bn.
                      "Let us be clear about three facts. First, all battles and all wars are won in the end by the infantryman. Secondly, the infantryman always bears the brunt. His casualties are heavier, he suffers greater extremes of discomfort and fatigue than the other arms. Thirdly, the art of the infantryman is less stereotyped and far harder to acquire in modern war than that of any other arm." ------- Field Marshall Wavell, April 1945.

                        Interesting; we call that a Combat Team. A Battle Group normally consists of 3 or 4 Combat Teams.

                          I thought in the Congo the Inf Gp was made up of a Batallion and more.

                          Catch-22 says they have a right to do anything we can't stop them from doing.
