  • Military Medal for Gallantry.

    Has anyone got a list of winners and of the Military Medal for Gallantry (An Bonn Mileata Calmachta) handy?

    I remember reading same some time back in J.P. Duggan's History of The Irish Army, but don't have it to hand at the moment.

    A brief description of year/location for each would be handy too...

      Those were for UN service. I dimly recall reading an award of the medal for service during an escape attempt at Portlaoise Prison in the 70s, was I imagining things?

            Military Medal for Gallantry was never issued in Ireland only overseas.

            Pte Thomas Metcalfe received the MMG 3rd Class for actions performed in Portlaois Prison on 25 July 1981. The source for that is Decorations and medals of the Republic of Ireland by Eamonn O'Toole.

            The dates for the others are

            8/11/60 Tpr Browne.
            7/4/80 Capt Ainsworth
            8/4/80 Lt Bracken, Cpl Jones and Pte Daly.

              I dont think he was a medic
              Things fall apart; the centre cannot hold;
              Mere anarchy is loosed upon the world,
              The blood-dimmed tide is loosed, and everywhere***
              The ceremony of innocence is drowned;
              The best lack all conviction, while the worst
              Are full of passionate intensity.

                Two posts ago he didn't exist. Now that we have established his existence can anybody provide any more detail.

                  I was just wondering were any medals awarded by the state for the rebels who fought during the war of independance?

                    yes, there was an issue of roughly 15,000 medals, went to those who played some part in the war of independence, there was another similar medal with fewer issued. details in the o'toole book i think. i have one of these medals at home, appeared out of nowhere. The ribbon is black and orange, beneath the ribbon is the medal itself, on it is a volunteer wearing a bandolier and carrying a rifle. somewhere is written the word comhrac, meaning courage. on the reverse is a laurel.

                      Ther was a 1916 medal and a 1916 survivors medal issued on the 50th anniversary. The one stameen soldier describes is the Black and Tan medal and again there was a survivors medal issued in 1972. The Comrac clasp was only issued to someone who actually took part in combat.

                        If everyone who got a War of Independence medal actually fought, we'd have invaded England, and they'd be speaking Irish in London today.

                          Its often wondered how Michael Collins evaded capture,considering he was always assisted by a band of about 10 000 loyal volunteers..

                            Quite true. I know that the local Old IRA Commemoration Committee here, have requested firing parties for blokes who were in the IRA at the age of 5 or 6.:D

                              the medal i have at home also has "cogadh na saoirse" (lit. war of freedom) on the bottom, has the crests of the four provinces surrounding the volunteer.

                              anybody have any idea what its worth?
