must rewatch sky news report on the UN obs coming under fire, was almost 100% sure I saw one of our lads on the screen for a second.... certainly looked like Irish DPM but sadly i had to run to catch the train and couldnt play it back.

"No, sir. He's a sergeant, and they don't deserve no respect at all, sir. I should know. They're cunning and artful, if they're any good. I wouldn't mind if he was an officer, sir. But sergeants are clever."

attachments not working mate - but there was deffo a UN Observer from the DFI on the BBC footage (you could even read IRELAND above his tricolour on his left arm).

i'm quite shocked they seem to be using mobile phones to record footage and are not in armoured vehicles - only a matter of time before they have casualties.

I'd be surprised if someone hasnt started the Ban Ki-moon "brink of civil war" drinking game yet. If I hear him say it again, I think I'll have an aneurysm.

From the outside the whole deployment of observers seems like a classic cluster**** destined for disaster, but I have massive respect for anyone prepared to to enter a warzone unarmed, trying to make a positive difference.

                agreed.

the DFI and other nations have brave men and women out there - the UN needs to equip this mission properly - starting with armoured vehicles and proper cameras to record the atrocities.

i do feel the Arab Nations should do more to sort this out.

Standing outside the Safir Hotel in Homs as the white UN Nissan landcruisers stood waiting, the Irish officer in charge, Mark Reynolds came over: “Usual rules Alex OK? We’re not responsible for you guys. If you get into trouble we’ll leave you, yes? You’re on your own.”
“Yup – no problem Mark. Understood.”

I always say that, sort of assuming it will never come to that in any case.

Just two UN plus the local police white patrol car marked “Protocol” as escort, moving south through the peaceful areas of Homs, unmarked by war.

In a war where they slit the throats of toddlers back to the spine, what's the big deal in sending a van full of journalists into the killing zone, writes Alex Thomson.

Problem with that theory is that Syria is the Arab nation when it comes to war. The only other Sunni nation is Saudi Arabia and they couldn't beat flies off a rice pudding. Add to that the fact that Iran uses the Shia minority -Assads mob -in Syria to funnel munitions and money to Hezbollah in the Leb, you'll have a long wait.
And btw, you were right about the DF observer...I noticed him on the 6.01 news on RTE.

I knew it, it was only a split second, but once you know your DPM ya cant mistake it! Fair balls to whoever it was, explosions were only at the bottom of the road and not a steyr or armoured vehicle in sight. From 1min49secs deffo DFI soldier.
