Cabinet has approved the Defence Forces to deploy up to 6 observers as part of the new UN mission in Syria.

    More to follow.

Catch-22 says they have a right to do anything we can't stop them from doing.

How many more are going to follow?
      Things fall apart; the centre cannot hold;
Mere anarchy is loosed upon the world,
The blood-dimmed tide is loosed, and everywhere***

The best lack all conviction, while the worst
      Are full of passionate intensity.

Irish monitors travel to Syria next week

Irish military monitors are to take up duty in strife-torn Syria on Friday -- less than two weeks after being chosen for the task.

The six unarmed observers will join a United Nations mission, whose role it is to oversee a cessation of violence "in all its forms by all parties".

The head of UN peacekeeping, Herve Ladsous, said the 24 monitors already in Syria had helped, simply by their presence, to reduce some of the worst mayhem in the country.

He accused the Syrian regime and the rebels of violating a ceasefire accord.

But he expected that the full contingent would be in place there by the end of the month.

Defence Minister Alan Shatter said participation by the Defence Forces in the supervision mission would, once again, reaffirm Ireland's continued support for the UN.

I think it is a very bad idea putting irish guys on the ground out there. Hopefully they'll be safe enough.

Unarmed men getting shot would be the main reason.

Ieland has been sending unarmed observers to war zones for many years before we started sending armed ones. Their safety record is quite good.

Hopefully I'll be wrong and no observers will be killed by either side for any political purposes.

Unarmed observers are gonna change **** all. Both sides will violate the ceasefire, when and how they want to.

They certainly won't stop because a unarmed observers may well tell tales on them. The only thing that would make either side reconsider their actions or help protect and deliver aid to affected civilians, are armed troops.

Unarmed observers are just a token gesture from a toothless UN.

Declan Power wrote a good article a couple of weeks ago on Syria, in the article he explained the differing roles of observer missions, peace keeping and peace enforcing missions. Simply put the purpose of Observer missions is to observe and report back to the UN on the viability of the brokered cease fire, the UN can then decide what steps to take next.

There have however been suggestions that people in Syria who have been speaking to monitors have been targeted.

So, how many divisions are you ready to deploy to force a separation?

that's what everyone should be asking the UN, not a sensible Irish soldier who can see this for what it is worth.
