The Minister for Justice, Equality and Defence Mr. Alan Shatter T.D.,
Welcomes The Announcement by County Cavan VEC

The Minister for Justice, Equality and Defence Mr. Alan Shatter T.D., welcomes the announcement by County Cavan Vocational Education Committee (VEC) that it is to purchase the former military barracks in Cavan for development as an Educational institution. The news comes following discussions between officials of the Department of Defence and officials from the VEC.
In November 2011 the Government approved a proposal from Minister Shatter for the closure of four barracks including O’ Neill Barracks in Cavan. Following the announcement of the Government decision the Minister asked the Department to contact each Government Department, various agencies and local authorities seeking expressions of interest in acquiring any of the properties to benefit the local community as a whole but with particular emphasis on job creation measures. Minister Shatter says that “this approach is now bearing fruit”.

Castlebar Barracks has already been sold to Mayo County Council, discussions are ongoing in relation to the sale of a portion of Clonmel Barracks and the sale of Cavan Barracks has now been agreed. The Minister welcomes this initiative by Cavan VEC who is taking over a facility that will see them consolidate their services in the Cavan area. The Minister wishes to express his thanks to local Dáil Deputies Joe O’ Reilly, Sean Conlan and Heather Humphreys for their support and commitment to ensuring this project was brought to a successful conclusion and most importantly that the local community in Cavan will benefit as a whole from the sale.
