  • Tracked Strykers

It looks like the US Army are introducing a new model of the Stryker, tracked, heavier armour and twice the weight.

It's more like what the Bradley was supposed to be.

Being shown at a trade show does not mean a Military is "introducing" a piece of Equipment. GD != US Army.

Not so sure about that. GD is a very large lobbyist and sponsor of both political parties. A need would be identified to suit their latest offering.

It's not the only large Defenc(/s)e manufacturer to employ lobbyists, what you're looking at is a prototype of GDs potential submission for an upcoming M113 replacement competition. If BAE/Textron had vehicles at AUSA also would you say they're being introduced by the US army?

The F111 was the loser in a competion for the US Navy. The USAF ended up with it.

The YF17 was a looser to the F16 for the Air Force, it subsequently became the F-18 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Northrop_YF-17
I am sure there were other times similar things happened.

Well, wouldn't a tracked Stryker be slower, less fuel-efficient and more maintenance-intensive than a wheeled version? What would be the point?

Heavier armour & better mobility over rough terrain.

So what? No competition has even started that a Tracked "Stryker" variant may compete in.

perhaps they've got to the point where the weight of a fully armoured-up wheeled Stryker is too heavy for it's wheeled undercarriage and requires a tracked set up to spread the extra weight?

The whole point of Stryker is that is strategically mobile (being fairly light and small).

This is not a replacement for the wheeled Stryker, it is a proposed replacement for the M113.

The wheeled Strykers are being remanufactured with double V shaped hulls. Will be around for a while yet.
