Justice Committee to visit Glen of Imaal to review Defence Forces Mission Readiness Exercise
A delegation from the Committee on Justice, Defence and Equality will visit the Glen of Imaal, Co. Wicklow next Thursday, 18th April 2013 to review a Mission Readiness Exercise by the 108th Infantry Battalion which will be deployed on peacekeeping duties in Lebanon with the United Nations.

Committee Chairman David Stanton, TD, said: “As the 108th Infantry Battalion is due to depart to Lebanon shortly, it is both timely and opportune to view at first hand the preparations it is undertaking for its peacekeeping mission in that volatile region. The purpose of the mission readiness exercise is to prepare Defence Forces personnel for the full spectrum of operations they may face on peacekeeping duties, including civic engagement, explosive strikes, anti-ambush tactics and dealing with roadside bombs. This visit will give us the opportunity to witness at first hand the robust live fire tactical training which will exercise the troops in their team work and use of weapons with live ammunition.

“As well as providing an opportunity to review the Mission Readiness Exercise, we will also receive a briefing on the Defence Forces’ peacekeeping operations with a focus on Lebanon. The Defence Forces have 55 continuous years’ experience on peacekeeping operations in some of the most hostile countries around the globe, protecting some of the most vulnerable people in the world.

“As the committee with a remit in the area of defence, we are looking forward to getting an update on the work the Defence Forces are undertaking to prepare troops for peacekeeping duties in Lebanon.

“This week’s visit follows a recent visit by the Committee to Collins Barracks, the National Maritime College in Ringaskiddy and the Naval Base, Haulbowline in Cork to be briefed on the work carried out at these facilities. The Committee is committed to visit as many of these facilities as possible so it is fully informed on the important work that these military personnel based there undertake on behalf of the State.”

Any media wishing to accompany the Committee must be accredited by the Defence Forces Press Office. Photographs of this visit will be provided by the Defence Forces Press Office.
