  • Jack Allshire

Jack Allshire, RUR D-Day veteran (Sword Beach) passed away this evening at around 1900. I was with Jack on a trip to France for the 60th Anniversary of D-Day in 2004, and Jack was an absolute gentleman. Here's a piece about him:

    Rest in peace, Jack.

I knew a simple soldier boy.....
Who grinned at life in empty joy,
Slept soundly through the lonesome dark,
And whistled early with the lark.

In winter trenches, cowed and glum,
With crumps and lice and lack of rum,
He put a bullet through his brain.
And no one spoke of him again.

You smug-faced crowds with kindling eye
Who cheer when soldier lads march by,
Sneak home and pray you'll never know
The hell where youth and laughter go.

I was on that trip also and remember Jack well. One of nature's gentlemen. May the Lord Jesus bless him and bring him into His Kingdom. May he rest in peace.
