No.4 is actually a Leopard 1. Look at the exhaust grill at the rear of the vehicle. Also the general sloped top of the hull running from front to rear. There is the shape of the turret as well just to confirm.

California Tanker
21st January 2006, 00:03
I just got the red X on the one listed as a T-64.

Number 4 is not a Leopard 2, it's likely either a Leopard1A5 or possibly a Leopard 1A2A2, the differences are internal. It's been given the common uparmour package on the turret, though I don't recall ever seeing the glacis armour before.

6 does look like that Israeli T54/44(Tiran5 ??)
Think Sledger nailed the rest og them though. That BTR 90 is just like a BTR 80 with a BMP2 turret on top, especially with what looks to be an AT-5.

I'm completely open to be corrected

Well, correct answers have been provided for everything. The controversial ones are the Type 90 (Well done Homer, people usually say Leo 2), the EE-9 which is still around in some second/third rate militaries, BTR-90 really is in effect just a BTR with a BMP-2 turret on it, K1A1 is the accepted designation for that variant of the Type-88 (The original name for the K1, nice to see someone knows it), the T-54-based tanks are indeed Israeli Ti-67 Tirans, and #7 is the South African Olifant.

California Tanker
21st January 2006, 18:20
1. T-54/55 I hope. It's that or a -62, but I'm betting on the earlier tank.
2. Could do with a bigger picture, but MTLB looks right.
3. BMP-3
4. FV4201. TOGS makes it a Mk11 or Mk12.
5. Is interesting. First glance makes it appear to be a bog-standard BRDM-2 recon vehicle, but looking closely between the wheels, you will note that the drop-down chain-driven wheels are apparently missing. Take another look at the turret as well, and you will see that it is not the standard 14.5mm turret. I'm thinking, as a result, that it's actually a BRDM-2U command vehicle, the center wheels and drive mechanism removed for internal space, ditto the turret.

NTM

Homer
21st January 2006, 18:41
Think last one is BRDM-2 RKH, seems to have the flag box attached to the top of the hull.

California Tanker
21st January 2006, 19:02
I was wondering about that, but the photo I have of an RKH has a large box affixed to the front of the vehicle, just above the driver's window. Upon further reflection though, it does seem more reasonable.

[ETA, I just had a bit of a root around, for the sake of being sure. It seems the box I saw is not a standard thing, and the turret does look like the one in the picture. RKH it is.]

NTM

California Tanker
21st January 2006, 19:07
Right, have at it, lads.

No 2 is a curio. No 3 I want something more specific than "T-54/55", and reason you can tell the difference. No 5, again, is one people frequently get wrong, think before you type.

DOH!!Made a blunder there, was looking at another image and trying to compare them, but got tunnel vision and posted about the wrong one!! Picture I was looking at had no fume extractor on the end of the barrel, which is of course an obvious feature of the T 54.

Which means :it's the T55, because it does indeed have a fume extractor.

Sorry about any confusion. Hope I'm right now!

California Tanker
22nd January 2006, 02:26
Nope.

You were right the first time. It's a T-54, but fume extractors don't have anything to do with it. Anyone else? There are two giveways.

NTM

Homer
22nd January 2006, 02:36
Is it because the AA mount is on the commanders side, 'cos it's on the loaders station on a T-55?

California Tanker
22nd January 2006, 09:27
Djibouti.

Apparently one of their AMLs suffered an incident, the chassis was irreperable. So they shoved the turret onto a BTR-60. Probably has very good mobility.

NTM

California Tanker
23rd January 2006, 00:06
For the sake of clues, the primary giveaway is on the turret roof, the secondary one (Which works for all but pre-production T-55s) is on the hull front.

I give up- gun ventilator?

Bingo. The mushroom shaped ventilator on the front right of the turret roof. Only way to tell for sure between a 54 and a 55. The hole in the front slope for a fixed MG was removed on production T-55s
