The Irish Navy’s LE Niamh will dock on May 1
LIMERICK River Fest 2004 had some surprise announcements in its official press launch of the three-day May bank holiday festival, held at The Clarion Hotel’s penthouse on Tuesday.
Budweiser is sponsoring both a pub music trail and the BBQ with up to 50 countries represented, fireworks will burst over King John’s Castle after dark on Saturday 1, Day of Welcomes. while Classical Graffiti, Euradio, Jara Raja and Riverside Swing Band are new names on board.
The river regatta is set for Saturday, May 1 when 10 European countries join the EU and an international celebration of the integration takes place in the 25 old and new member states. Slovenia is Limerick’s twin state and a cultural and business programme involving our resepective interests underpins the general agenda.
The Irish Navy’s LE Niamh will dock on May 1, contrasting sharply with the Slovenian gandelo, a simple fishing boat, safely moored on George’s Quay. Skydiving into the Shannon will take place at 4.30pm between Sarsfield and Thomond bridges while earlier in the day, a freestyle kayaking demonstration will excite the waters at Curraghower Falls. Six city schools will float timber houses down the Abbey River after 6pm from George’s’ Quay.
"It’s a Slovenian custom,” explained River Fest publicist Olivia O’Sullivan at the launch. "The little houses will be lit as lanterns, bearing dreams and wishes as they float downstream. this embraces the Slovenian tradition of the Day of Lights which welcomes in Spring each year”.
Sunday May 2 sees Limerick Chamber of Commerce match Slovenian commercial interests with Irish at a select Clarion Hotel lunch.
"Business people with an eye Slovenia as an opportunity for import/export trade should get in touch,” advised the chamber’s Dave Bourke. "The building industry and food products are two principal categories of interest. One to one appointments can be made where Slovenian and Limerick interests are matched and there will be ‘breakaway’ rooms available at the hotel for private meetings”. Contact him on 061-415180 for details.
Music is a major component of Riverfest with King John’s Castle and Trinity Rooms hosting the principal concerts. Limerick Radio Club will broadcast Euradio from City Hall, contacting fellow operators in Slovenia and Europe.
The Riverside Swing Band gives a free concert in the castle at 4pm on Saturday May 1, Lyric FM presents Classical Graffiti at 7pm, promising 16 string instruments, four dancers and four singers in a unique combination of slapstick and talent.
Slovenian folk group Terra Folk follow at 8pm, Meteor award winners Woodstar then close the night with a late gig. On Sunday May 2, Trinity Rooms play in the Redroom courtyard from 7.30pm on, and is host to The Frame’s (castle gig) after-show party on Monday May 3 from 11pm.
George’s Quay is again the scene for the BBQ Cook-Off and European Fair. The Irish BBQ Association, with the Irish Peace Institute and Doras Luimni, organises the many stalls and nationalities represented.
"We have about 30 country teams organised and are looking for people to represent another 20,” says co-ordinator Tara Hartigan.”There is special emphasis on European countries to have a BBQ stall participating in this sponsored cook-off and tasting. All foodstuffs are being provided. Anyone interested in cooking for Estonia, Latvia, the Czech republic, Slovenia and other states is invited to get in touch with the City Co -Ordination Office now at 51 O’Connell St, tel. 061-400225”.
Duncan O’Toole has responsibility for organising The Milk Market’s launch scene of Riverfest, sensibly playing up the Epicurean and music angles for the Friday April 30 opening at 5pm.
"We’ll stay open until 10pm and there will be covered sitting available so people can sit around and eat cheeses, crepes, organic fruits, handmade chocolates, patisseries and so on,” he told the Limerick Post. "Wine and coffee will be served”.
The Umbrella Project and the Slovenian street theatre of Serpentes combine to entertain; the European Fair and French markets run from Saturday to Monday at Bank Place outside the Granary and at George’s Quay.
