  • St Patrick's Day Parades 2003

    Folks

What units are involved in parades around the country this year ? & what'll the marching bodies consist of?

In Dublin this year my understanding is that it'll be a distinctly non military affair. Nothing to do with the present political climate just because certain parade organisers didn't like the DPM uniforms and rifles in the parade

Haven't heard anything to the contrary. As far as I'm aware the Limerick Paddy's day parade will pass off as usual! DPM's and rifles with shiny boots and marching to a band that changes step every so often.

just a little off the point....... The paddys day parade in Ennis is cancelled this year, due to the fact that they cant afford the insurance costs, this is the case with numerous small towns around the country, i think its an awful shame.... oh well

Many units prefer to go without weapons for the St. Patricks day parade, it's saves alot of time (although the regs stipulate the colour party should be armed (lest someone try and steal the colours!)). The main body of troops is usually in PDM because most don't have service dress, with the colour party in service dress.

As far as Im aware we have the normal 3 parades although this year I think times are overlapping. DPM`s, Steyres and ball hopped boots the order of the day again.
Last year we all skipped step so many times that it was`nt funny. (officer and flag officer in one step and everybody else in step with the Cmdt behind the flag escort not funny at all. Also the amount of camera flashes and the rain. I nearly died after with the Flu.

Ideally the Comdt should take the step from the flag party (If there is a band both should take the step from the beat). If he doesn't well, as long as the flag party are in step and marching body are in step it doesn't look too bad.

When you reach the rank of Cmdt. you don't have much call for marching, you'll spend most of your time doing paperwork etc. It is not surprising that a Cmdt. may be out of practice with marching. If the main marching body take their step from the colour party and keep their distance from the Cmdt. things should run smoothly.

I find it much easier to march with a rifle, to me it feels a bit odd marching with both hands free. Can't explain why..... but thats the way it is!

Well I hope they never do away with the marching in the parade, as it's one of our few moments to meet the public.
                - as long as there is no crusty element yelling at us and hijacking the parade!!

I would have to agree with Loque here, if everyone takes their step from the ONE source there should be less chance of mistakes. I know in theory that you should be able to pass the step down the line but as stated a lot of the older officers are out of practice, although this should be no excuse!!!

Loque where does it say colour parties have to be armed? In my area it been years since we carried rifles on patricks day.

It's in the regulations, the rationale is that the colours have to be defended(it's an old fashioned reg but still stands), but most units turn a blind eye to avoid having weapons and security when you think about it, it is not necessary in this day and age.... no one is going to try and take the colours, at least not with a sub-unit of RDF marching behind it!. By the way once the colour party starts marching they are not susposed to stop until the end of the parade, most parades I've seen have had to halt the RDF contingent to allow the marching band to keep up!
It's also on the regs that an altar guard should be armed however depending on which diosis you're in you may not be allowed to have arms in a church.

Historicaly losing your colours, or having them captured is a colossal dishonour.
Capturing an enemies colours is a great honour, and you get to display it in your mess!!!

So I suppose for traditions sake it's best to keep them under guard,... just in case somebody tries to nick em! You can never trust those Frenchies or Germans,.... there will be plenty at the parade!! :D

Colours no matter which country it is are always under guard. Whether it be here with the tricolour or on the parade ground in Wellington Barracks in London or at Peral Habour every coutry guards it colours. Lets keep it that way.
