  • Sea Transport in Liberia

In Dec. / Jan.edition of An Cosantoir, an article on the Ops. Sgt and Air Liason officer, Sgt Will Fitzgerald, says that he can transport six MOWAGs ,two trucks and a Nissan using M.V. Caterina. Does anyone know anything about this vessel? It sounds like a small Ro Ro vessel or a landing craft.

Delivery of food to the southeast in Harper to
support DDRR activities was done by UNMIL chartered vessel (M/V CATERINA)
on 1st October. A total of 11 containers with 146.15 MT of assorted
commodities were loaded on the vessel including two containers of farming
    tools for FAO
It may be a small ro-ro ferry. I dont think the dutch have any landing craft of this size.

Catch-22 says they have a right to do anything we can't stop them from doing.

M.V. Caterina must be a " lift on lift off" vessel, if they are using a fork lift for the containers.
II containers totalling 146.15 tonnes = 13.28 tonnes each, that would be heavier than the usuall so they must have a "heavy lift derick". I wonder who operates this vessel, not us!

Why not contact WIll FItz directly- he is bound to have pictures of him and said vessel - he is a good bloke who you will find very helpful-

          Any photos?

Did anyone ever see any photos of the Caterina? Would be interesting to see what the Army used then.

many thanks for the photos, she looks a bit of a rust bucket, somehow I don't think it's a contender for the Blue green Replacement. Did Army personnel travell on her? If so what were the conditions like?

I think one can call that a bit of a jack of all trades. I wonder if the side ramp was available for use.

Registered in Batumi, Georgia. No real results on google.

The side ramp was used for foot passengers only.

More troop transport without naval escort!

MV Caterina used to transport Irish troops & equipment from Monrovia (Liberia) to Freetown, Sierra Leone in 2004. Photographed in May 2007, in Freetown.

Should have had a naval escort! LPV in Monrovia on 3 month deployment would have been nice.
