    There are a few mad ones there:

    Single-handed and slightly wounded he accosted a squad of 14 Confederate soldiers bearing the colors of the 16th Georgia Infantry
    Alot got it for capturing the enemy coulours.

          QUINLAN, JAMES

          Major, 88th New York Infantry. Place and date: At Savage Station, Va., 29 June 1862. Entered service at: New York, N.Y. Born: 13 September 1833, Ireland. Date of issue: 18 February 1891. Citation: Led his regiment on the enemy's battery, silenced the guns, held the position against overwhelming numbers, and covered the retreat of the 2d Army Corps.

          This lad was born in Clonmel. And there's a Carrick man there too.

                The 4th Commandant of the Marine Corps was born in Ireland, Lt Col Anthony Gale, the only Commandant to have been born outside the US. He also has the dubious distinction of being the only Commandant to have been given the boot as he was cashiered for drunkenness and visiting brothels...I think there was something about fighting in duels too. His portrait is never shown with the other commandants and even though wreaths are placed on the graves of the others on the MC Birthday each year, he is studiously ignored...You can take the Paddy out of Ireland.......
