it looks like we're not the only ones discontented with our lot, this guy has some interesting arguments, and some worrying ones...specifically about the performance of the AUG, is this guy a crank or what?Read morehere

Not qualified to comment on the crank thingy, even if the entire piece does reek a little of Walter Mitty-ism.
On the subject of the AUG, the Australian built version (F88?) supposedly has a poor reputation, mainly for reasons of materials and manufacture though, rather than for design. Apparently the composites used were not nearly as robust as the Austrian built weapons, and the barrels were not built to spec, hence the problems with premature wear.
Also heard that if carried with the butt on the floor of a helicopter in flight(UH-1 specificly), the rifle could cock and fire itself (this was from Jock on the old board). No idea if this is even possible, let alone true.

Yeah it seemed odd that the AUG should fail so magnanimously in the South Pacific with its gleaming reputation here and elsewhere, I noticed that the SASR weren't using them in Afghanistan either.
The links that are provided are actually quite interesting from our point of view.
Although I must be misunderstanding something, does one of the articles say that the Kiwis only have two regular battalions?"It is a general popular error to imagine that loudest complainers for the public to be the most anxious for it's welfare" Edmund Burke
