    • Finnish DF purchases 16 new RG 32Ms from BAE Systems' Land Systems OMC (SA) with an option of additional seven vehicles. Some of the vehicles will go for Finnish ISAF troops in Afganistan and the rest for training use in Finland.

        • Question- i was thinking the other day about this. How do we test AFV's I understand there are off road test etc but how do we test the armour on them,??? and what way do we rate vehicles before they are selected?
          But there's no danger
          It's a professional career
          Though it could be arranged
With just a word in Mr. Churchill's ear
If you're out of luck you're out of work
We could send you to johannesburg.

          • I presume the armour isn't destruction tested but it is required to perform to STANAG levels.

Those evaluating tenders are usually (and in the case of the LTAV were) given weighting to assess vehicle against each other...eg...

            Cost 15 %
            Maintainability 5%
            etc etc

Usually some DE officers get to take them for a spin at the lively end of a range

The RG-32M is a 4x4 Light Armoured Vehicle designed and manufactured by BAE Systems. The RG32M has various military and non-military applications to fulfill a wide spectrum of command, liaison, scouting, patrol and peacekeeping roles. The RG32M is a new development in the successful RG32 range, already deployed worldwide with peacekeeping forces, security forces and combat forces. The RG32M’s ample payload and capacity enables it to fulfil a wide spectrum of command, liaison and scouting roles. Typically it would transport five 95 percentile crew members with their kit, combat stores and special purpose equipment for a 48-hour battlefield mission.

Human sizes are normally distributed. The 95th percentile in this case means a person who is the same size as or larger than 95% of humans.

Is that worldwide or by nationality. The size 0f 95% of americans as opposed to 95% of say Chinese or does it just apply to Ireland, also is it gender neutral or specific?

                        • No. It's a generic size, such the aviation industry using a standard weight for adult males and adult females. The car industry is also concerned with height of the end users so generic size and weight models are used to decide the seat size and space available in the car's cabin. In aviation, it isn't always possible to actually weigh people so a weight, of say 85kg, is used for an adult male (regardless of actual weight, girth, legsize, etc) so that the pilots/load supervisors can generate a ballpark figure of how much the selfloading cargo weigh. It is also the case the passengers in some operations are actually weighed (helicopters being one case)(discretely, the weighing scales are under the carpet) and passengers distributed in the aircraft accordingly.Aer Arran's ATRs are critical on exact weight distribution so you will often see pax concentrated under the wing area to keep the load distribution right.
