Thats just a commercial scania painted green. its 6x4 and those twin wheel drive axles are useles offroad. all the shit gets jammed between the wheels and eventually breaks the bead. The cab is more useful for fire engines etc..

The DROPS was originally supposed to be another MAN,but the ivecos were available quicker for deployment to Kosovo. Still no complaints though. The MAN 8x8 Drops is HUGE. Would never make the turn in the glen.....

what we (and all militaries for that matter) need is a reliable no-frills machine that can do the job and do it well...one famous example was the American "duce and a half" truck (4 or 6 tonne?) which carried everything from troops to broken down vehicles...our last equivelent was the MAN Diesel...if we can find a truck that can go 20 miles, get shot up and go another 30 off-road we'll all be happy men i think...

Does anybody find it strange that the value is in GBP instead of Euro?

                          Trucks

Irish Defence Forces choose Scania 8x8

Westward Scania, National Importers and Distributors for the Swedish manufacturer in Ireland has won a contract to supply a minimum of 10 four axle, all-wheel drive military drops trucks to the Irish Army. The 8 x 8 chassis off-road vehicles are powered by Scania six-cylinder 420 hp diesel engine. The fully automatic LHD trucks, which carry a similar specification to 533 strong fleet ordered by the Dutch Defence Forces are equipped with Partek Cargotec hook-lift gear for handling containers.

Produced by Scania Nederland at Zwolle, the AWD multi-wheelers will be delivered to the Irish Army at the end of 2004 with the remainder by early 2005. A programme of driver training will be carried out by Westward Scania's instructor concurrently.

That means the DF is going to be using 2 types of DROPS trucks, makes no sense.

Scania’s 8x8 chassis was premiered at EuroSatory, the European military equipment show in Paris last year.

Possibly the reason for the choice of Scania over the IVECO ASTRA DROPS vehicle currently in use is Scania’s internationally acclaimed mine and ballistic-protected vehicle cab. The product of a joint venture between Scania and the Swedish Defence Matériel Administration (FMV) since 1999. Scania has already signed a contract with FMV for the supply of a total of 66 mine-shielded, 8x8 cross-country vehicles of the same type as those now proposed for the Netherlands

Does the DF now have too diverse a fleet of vehicles for a force of it's size?

Wasn't delivery date a big point in favour of the Iveco DROPS vehicles?
