that sounds like good craic, but only as you say, in hindsight :D
I knew a simple soldier boy.....
Who grinned at life in empty joy,
Slept soundly through the lonesome dark,
And whistled early with the lark.

In winter trenches, cowed and glum,
With crumps and lice and lack of rum,
He put a bullet through his brain.
And no one spoke of him again.

You smug-faced crowds with kindling eye
Who cheer when soldier lads march by,
Sneak home and pray you'll never know
The hell where youth and laughter go.

It's not scratch unless you get to go through the tunnel of water that's only about as wide as your shoulders.
To close with and kill the enemy in all weather conditions, night and day and over any terrain

Did you have the joy of going against the flow of water so that the water level increased the further you went in.

By the end I was kissing the ceiling of that tunnel.

                  Its character building-

I beleive that there should be a specially designed scratch or what ever the new PC term is course-

each recruit- cadet- apprentice- Pot Nco- Std Cse- Snr Cse- C & S cse

should have to do the exact same one-

it would be something that binds us all, in the way the US Marines have the cruicible, the Paras have the stretcher stroll, the wing have the long walk, the Itaians have the hair gel competition

and the Navy have the 20 major and a can of bumers competition.

No.Despite this and many other comments to the contrary ,it is still called scratch.
"Let us be clear about three facts. First, all battles and all wars are won in the end by the infantryman. Secondly, the infantryman always bears the brunt. His casualties are heavier, he suffers greater extremes of discomfort and fatigue than the other arms. Thirdly, the art of the infantryman is less stereotyped and far harder to acquire in modern war than that of any other arm." ------- Field Marshall Wavell, April 1945.
