So as previously discussed they are using the existing regulations to its fullest to expand the potential pool of population.
Surely the pool is large enough already though or I'd wonder if the age profile among regular attendees in some units has gone that old... It may be facilitating getting a number of potential applicants already tapped for the course who have age against them onto the course.
As for the 3* thing, even it was opened up - I couldn't see a 3* getting on the course where there are NCO applicants already available unless he/she has a specialised skill set.

Will have to wait and see how it is advertised (eg they may say you have to be 3*). Firstly they have to want to do it.
That 3* (like a Sgt) will need to be recommended by Coy Comdr, Unit Comdr (possibly GOC) and have a degree just to get an interview.
They then have to pass the interview, medical (to the standard above) and ITs, to get a place on the course.
Then they have to complete the course, pass all the tests and only then can they get commissioned.
There's at least 3 or 4 RDF members of 2 Cav Sqn (another departed the RDF) qualified to serve on the Escort (know one of them myself)
"Well, stone me! We've had cocaine, bribery and Arsenal scoring two goals at home. But just when you thought there were truly no surprises left in football, Vinnie Jones turns out to be an international player!" (Jimmy Greaves)!"
I though the RDF lads were chuck off the EOH months ago when a Three strip objected that they were not subject to Military law ?
Said three striper needs to make himself more familiar with DFR R5, the Defence Act, etc.

It's the 1954 Act. One of the problems we have at the moment due to high turnover is a lack of knowledge ( both PDF and RDF, AND THE DOD ) of the provisions of the act
S119
Each of the persons mentioned in this section shall, for the purposes of this Act, be a
person subject to military law as a man—
(a) a man of the Permanent Defence Force at all times,
(b) a reservist when—
(i) he is called out on permanent service or in aid of the civil power, or
(ii) he is called out for training, exercise or other duty under this Act,
or
(iii) he is voluntarily attending training, or
(iv) he is undergoing treatment in a military hospital, orhe is employed on military service under the orders of an officer,
who is himself subject to military law, or
(vi) he is in uniform
The electronic Irish Statute Book (eISB) comprises the Acts of the Oireachtas (Parliament), Statutory Instruments, Legislation Directory, Constitution and a limited number of pre-1922 Acts.
You can look that up on your phone in less than 30 seconds.

3 RDF on the EOH last night, did a super job representing the 2 Cav Reserve element. There were plenty of them on the EOHs for the 2016 celebrations, St Patricks Day, Easter Sunday etc
