The recruitment ban will not apply to the Garda Reserve, whose members are unpaid volunteers who do not occupy public service posts.
Mr Ahern added: “This Government has been assiduous in increasing the levels of gardaí over the past number of years. We will do our best to keep the numbers as high as we can.”Amateurs built the ark. Professionals built the Titanic.

My sympathies, you lot didnt deserve this.Things fall apart; the centre cannot hold;
Mere anarchy is loosed upon the world,
The blood-dimmed tide is loosed, and everywhere***
The ceremony of innocence is drowned;
The best lack all conviction, while the worst
Are full of passionate intensity.

Is that legally or under current DF regs?
One requires a Dail or ministerial act to change the other can be changed by the MA when ever they feel like it.Without supplies no army is brave.

Actually, I'm just gonna go ahead and say what I really think. Which is,
Will I, along with the rest of my company, be asked at parade, by my company commander to apply for discharge? Clearly our time and effort is not, never has been and never will be appreciated, so to continue to commit to an organisation and state that views us as the annoying little pest in the corner is, quite simply, a degrading waste of time. Degrading. Because that's what it is.Is God willing to prevent evil, but not able? Then he is not omnipotent.

If you believe that you are useless (wgich is how the MA want to RDF to feel), then that is what you will be - useless.
Why is there so must negativity? Lets focus on the present - we're stiill here, and here we intend to stay. Lets get on with what we do, and maybe, just maybe the MA & DOD might realise that there is possibly some value for money in the RDF.
If you don't know what is meant by value for money, ask an accountant.
If you don't know how the RDF could be value for money, then either you are PDF with a grudg against the RDF, or not in the DF at all.
If you are in the RDF and do not know how the RDF could be value for money, then either you are not in it long enough to know (so keep on going), or you are in it a good while, and have no faith in the RDF, so why waste your time? Do something else with you time, and we might have a slimmer, more streamlined RDF without any begrudgers.
In otherwords, this shi*e talk of what might happen when / if somebody makes a decision is only increasing paranoia for no reason. What will happen will happen, and it will happen beacuse the politicos in Government and not just DOD but mostly Finance will decide. We cannot influence them, so why get pannicky?

found this on the RDFRA website
Moratorium on Promotions and Recruitment.
The Government has announced a moratorium on promotions and recruitment to the Public Service, including the Defence Forces, with effect from 27th March 2009. Despite the official Department of Finance press release referring to the Permanent Defence Force only, the Department of Defence has interpreted the instruction as applying to the Reserve Defence Force. This means that no RDF post, however arising, may be filled by recruitment, promotion, or by the payment of an allowance for the performance of duties at a higher rank. Any exceptions to this principle will require the prior sanction of the Minister for Finance.
This instruction supersedes the previous instruction limiting recruitment to the RDF up to the effective strength as at 31 January 2009.
RDFRA is seeking clarification of the following matters affected by the Government decision:
That potential recruits that have already started the lengthy enlistment process and have taken part in pre-induction training will continue to have their applications processed and be enlisted in due course.
That advancement of recruits and 2 star privates to 2 star and 3 star privates respectively will continue as it is advancement rather than promotion.
Promotion competitions that have been advertised will be completed and the successful candidates be promoted.
RDFRA is opposed to the operation of the moratorium in the Defence Forces as given the voluntary nature of the RDF, the negative impact this action will have on the morale and operational effectiveness of the organisation will by far exceed any financial savings gained.Strategy without tactics is the slowest route to victory. Tactics without strategy is the noise before defeat.

RDFRA were opposed to the Bks closures too, but could do bugger all about it either.
On the subject of recruits, we managed to get in the biggest end of the ones we
had, the last few bit the dust as their paperwork was not as advanced in the chain
as the rest
Sworn in and all at this stage.
Not that's a nice bit of work
Only issue is whether there will be a centralised recruit camp this year or notLast edited by Truck Driver; 23 April 2009, 06:56."Well, stone me!
