  • Roisín Damaged. Again!

ATLANTIC COAST: THE NAVAL Service patrol vessel LE Roisín is undergoing urgent repairs in Galway dock, following wave damage in severe weather off Kerry coast during a New Year’s Eve fishery patrol.

The damage to the “flare” or custom-built bow has been attributed to a hostile Atlantic.

The vessel was travelling northwards and had just left the Blasket Sound when the superstructure was hit.

It was not holed, but the port side of the bow’s flaring was “pushed in”, a Naval Service spokesman said.

The vessel had up to 44 crew under the command of Lieut-Cdr Owen Mulowney.

A course was set for Galway, to effect temporary repairs, but it is expected the vessel will return to the Naval Service base at Haulbowline for further examination.

It is the second time the LE Roisín – one of the two most recently built ships owned by the Naval Service – has been damaged in heavy seas. Just over five years ago, in October 2004, its flaring was hit when it was en route to a Canadian submarine 100 miles west of the Donegal coast. A fire had broken out on board the HMCS Chicoutimi , claiming the life of one Canadian officer and injuring two crewmen. The LE Aoife was tasked to assist when the LE Roisín was forced to turn back.

The Naval Service said, in this incident, the watertight integrity was not affected.

A spokesman said the “flare” is designed to protect crew accommodation in heavy weather.

Four Naval Service vessels remained on sailing order over Christmas, and fishery patrols resumed on December 28th.

Minister for Defence Willie O’Dea has promised to buy two new vessels to replace ageing Naval Service vessels, but has deferred the delivery to 2012-2013, “subject to Government approval on funding”.

Three months ago, Defence Forces representative organisation Pdforra expressed concern about Naval Service crew safety, claiming holes had been discovered in two of the older vessels
Thank jesus that on one was hurt, LtCdr Mulowney is one of our best young captains so at least you can be more or less sure he wouldnt have had them out there without good reason. He's not a storm chaser like some others.

I wonder was the flare damage to the same spot or do we now have another weakened section of bow to worry about.

    Happy New Years lads!

M1 - 50 NM West of Aran Islands (62090) Wave Buoy Data : Nil

This wave buoy hasn't reported in the last 24 hours. It may be damaged temporarily, down for routine maintenance, removed for the season or permanently out of action

M3 - 30 NM Southwest of Mizen Head (62092) Wave Buoy Data

Wave height during 31st was between 4.8m and 5.2m with a period between 6 and 9 seconds.

K2 Buoy (62081) Wave Buoy Data

Wave height during 31st was between 8.1m and 10.6m with a period between 9 and 12 seconds.

I think this is what damaged the bow rather than anything else. Thats a boody rough time out there!

Unless someone sees exactly what the captain sees (and has access to the same information (and only that information) they shouldn't be commenting.

He may have had different information
He may have been trying to get back to shelter having gone out
It could have been a freek wave
It could have been a life and death SAR incident and he wayed up the odds

Zulu, bear in mind the incident happened just outside Blasket Sound, the nearest bouy is M3 (a fair distance from Blasket and 30nm offshore)

All the weather forecasts said the same thing, Don't go out to sea.
If you did go out and were trying to get back to shelter thats a bad judgement call in itself. Theres no such thing as a "Freak" wave and it would have been mentioned if the good crew Róisín were responding to a distress or on a SAR operation.

Dev, please bear in mind that everyone can have an opinion, objective or not and shouldn't be shouted down because it's outside your paremeters of thought.

thanks A.B. i dont know how much dev knows about the sea but a famous signal that any captain should send would be INTEND remaining at anchor until moderation in weather this says that the weather is too bad to superiors and it would be only a rescue that he would be advised to go out on... and yes i can comment on naval matters as experience means a lot in these matters..

Dev, I know that. I also have 20 years marine experience and professional qualifications in the area.

Valentia recorded gusts of 52Kts with Shannon Airport recorting 43 kts.

The weather the length of the west coast from shore to M1,M3,M4 was shit. No other way to describe it.

Just wondering, if the ship was heading north, and the wind and waves were from the north-east, how come it was the port bow that was damaged?

                      Was anyone hurt?

Mere anarchy is loosed upon the world,
The blood-dimmed tide is loosed, and everywhere***
                      The ceremony of innocence is drowned;

Not having the charts at hand or any information about the tides and winds and sea state at that exact location at that time, I can only guess that the clue is in the line that the ship had "just left the blasket sound". Again stressing that I also don't know the exact position of the ship at the time, but water has to go around and so if water is trying to go southwards into the sound it could have been deflected slightly eastwards, meaning that the port bow would be hit.

Is he able, but not willing? Then he is malevolent.
Is he both able and willing? Then whence cometh evil?
Is he neither able nor willing? Then why call him God?

for the uninitiated amongst us what is a flaring?
                          But there's no danger
                          It's a professional career
                          Though it could be arranged
With just a word in Mr. Churchill's ear
If you're out of luck you're out of work
We could send you to johannesburg.
