i was up there during my army days in finner cmp found it a bit spookey its true about Buncranna not a very friendly place but i have to say the sceanery up there in the summer was breathtaking and all around Donegal must pay a visit again havent been up there in years nostalgia creeping in i think. EMMM i wonder would they let me into Finner again they might be looking for a guard commander.

What good is in youth when it's ageing what joy are in eyes that cant see when there's sorrow in sunshine and flowers and only our rivers run free.

was up there yesterday and i took a few pics, ill post them up here...

I knew a simple soldier boy.....
Who grinned at life in empty joy,
Slept soundly through the lonesome dark,
And whistled early with the lark.

In winter trenches, cowed and glum,
With crumps and lice and lack of rum,
He put a bullet through his brain.
And no one spoke of him again.

You smug-faced crowds with kindling eye
Who cheer when soldier lads march by,
Sneak home and pray you'll never know
The hell where youth and laughter go.

Nice pictures. I have planned to go there next holydays. How is the situation of the other fortifications at Lough Swilly? Lenan Head? And the older ones: Neds Point, Down Fort, Rathmullan…

AFAIK Fort Dunree is the only fort that was used by the Free State after being taken over (open to correction).

Well open given the ammo for the guns in Spike was only removed in the 80s and Carlisle is still in use.
