  • Last Pic, were those the Typhoon suits?
Again another photo of how far we have come in terms of proper PPE.
For now, everything hangs on implementation of the CoDF report.

    • Eithne still lands helis????

Cmdr Fitzgerald said that he didn’t believe the controversy aired at the trial in Sicily regarding the LE Niamh’s unwillingness to enter Libyan territorial waters would have any impact on relations with the Italian coast guard and the LE Eithne’s mission in the Mediterranean.
He said the LE Eithne, with its helicopter-landing facilities, was the ideal type of vessel for the operation and he was convinced the crew would do a very good job on behalf of the Irish State in assisting the Italian authorities in the rescue of migrants.
Do we still have the full capability to land helis on her deck, have we done so in recent years??

      taken from here
"He is an enemy officer taken in battle and entitled to fair treatment."
"No, sir. He's a sergeant, and they don't deserve no respect at all, sir. I should know. They're cunning and artful, if they're any good. I wouldn't mind if he was an officer, sir. But sergeants are clever."

            • Don't think we have mentioned it before but 2 important roles for the MRV could be:

              - having space and facilities (including Accomodiation) for IMERC type work - that could be space that would be otherwise occupied if doing other missions (eg space for a few TEUs and trainee Accomodiation

              - the facilities to allow more Enterprise Ireland type deployments (fill it up with beef, Baileys and Guinness and send it on a cruise. This is economically important (especially due to BREXIT) and is realistically the biggest threat to Ireland

              #defend protect support

No. dont agree. WTF, it will be our most capable vessel and we want to sanction it for a cruise carrying shamrocks and shillelaghs? rent a vessel for the purpose or get the department of enterprise trade and employment to pay for a national mutlirole vessel that when it isnt swanning around selling st patrick, can work alongside celtic voyager etc. our navy is far too small to be sending 10% of it off on a trading mission.

                • Given that three of our ships are quickly approaching the end of the extended life and also how many years it takes to tender, build and deliver ships, are we on track to replace eithnie and the peacocks. Though that we would be seeing tenders or at least expressions of interest by now. What's the current thinking

Did I say it should even spend 5% of its time doing so!

Foreign cruises are good for morale.

They can also be linked with other ops (eg Niamh did a resupply to UNMEE on the way to Asia). Let's say the MRV went to Joint Warrior off Scotland (through in a economic tasking of 2 on the way).

The IMERC work can be done during normal ops

                    • During P31 deployment to USA Bi-Centennial celebrations in NY certain Trade elements were sewn into two dinners done on board for a pre-positioned Irish Trade delegation. The main courses were mainly Irish Beef, Creams, and other Irish refreshments. Having a flight deck was pivotal as a table for fifty guests was produced on both occasions, with postprandial seating to admire the Harbour festivities. Using ships as a focus for a trade advantage is not unknown, such as Niamh in the Far East.

                      • And Eithne in South America. It brought some of Ireland to the Diaspora over there. Some of whom had ancestors responsible for founding many of the South American Naval forces.

                        • Coming back to the AOR idea: The Canadian JSS takes the German Berlin class AOR and adds some vehicle and troup carrying capability. While they went for a ridiculously expensive ship, I think modifying the Norwegian LSS in that way might work.

An AOR is a tanker, designed primarily to refuel a battlegroup at sea. To keep frigates and destroyers on station extending their time at sea.
The newer LSS such as that from Norway add some transport capability but they would be used in a wider NATO Group. It is only when you go up to the size of the Dutch HNLMS Karel Doorman that you being to get a useful multirole ship, but at a cost of around $480m.
I would more go for the smaller and cheaper BRP Tarlac which is a SSV (LPD), and comes in at around a tenth of the cost, it is less that a P60 class. It can be fitted with a 76mm up front, can lift and deploy MOWAG's etc.
Only problem is it has a big flightdeck from which helicopters can operate and we know that is a no-go for a NS ship!http://www.naval-technology.com/proj...-vessels1.html
