The carrying of stores is not the most immediate capability that needs to be addressed, given that it can be done by regular carriers and as such does not detract from ongoing NS ops.

An ETV would be too slow to be a OPV

The immediate needs and probable needs within a given future time window appear to be a more realistic basis for the design parameters which in turn are gleaned from ongoing ops and situations where certain capabilities that were needed were not available in the current flotilla configeration , all subject to acquisition and operational costings.
But any suggestions?

Looks similar in concept to P31. I note that they upgraded their onboard Lynx to the NH90.

The main need can be met by production or purchase of the Hull and Engine installation drawings. All the rest can be covered by our requirements as regards fit out and armament. As far as Budgets are concerned, if they are squeezed, like the last of the family toothpaste, from the overall Defence Budget, you wind up with a toothless tiger frustrated with what should have been. But in any event, this is a little exercise in seeing if there is a hull of suitable size out there, There may be more, and you can also just give an RFP dimensions of 105m X 15m X 5.25m at a calculated hull speed of 24.9kts.

So what is the budget for Eithne mk 2?.......Perhaps we could look at it from another angle. What if the "fueling costs" of new ships could be reduced ?
The newest submarines (non-nuke) will be powered by batteries "The advantage of lithium-ion batteries is that you won't need to return to port" to refuel, said Masao Kobayashi, a retired admiral who commanded Japan's submarine force until 2009.You can just find a quiet place at sea and recharge your batteries. That means significantly longer operations."
Submarines are huge in comparison to NS vessels (current and proposed) and NS vessels don't submerge. Batteries could be on permanent charge while powering the ship by using wind power to charge them.
Any Electrical engineers out there who could give an estimate of how many "cells" would be needed to power an opv and how practical ongoing re-charge would be?
Deisel power as a "fallback" of course. We could patent the design for OPVs and make some money for hovertanks.Last edited by Galloglass; 29 January 2016, 15:03.
