Eithne was commissioned into service with its Rh202 when every other ship had Oerlikon 20mm, later replaced with GAM-BO1 20mm.(or HMG, as in Orla, Ciara and Deirdre's case) Eithne still has her original weapon fit.
The RH202 fitted to the other vessels were purchased in the early 2000s.Last edited by na grohmiti; 21 February 2016, 19:00.For now, everything hangs on implementation of the CoDF report.

logic would suggest either going for training/procurement/logistics commonality and sticking with the 78mm OM, or, assuming the Future Capability Vessel goes in a 'fighty' direction you might want a larger gun 4.5 - 5 inch etc.. for both greater range and effect, and in order to be able to use guided ammunition.

There are no plans for her disposal at all yet. She is in the tail end of a deep refit at present, and won't be going anywhere any time soon. She was over engineered, and is not showing signs of age. She is still doing patrols in all weathers while the P20s were all on "light duties" at this stage.
Get used to seeing her wearing the tricolour aft for a while yet.For now, everything hangs on implementation of the CoDF report.

the work is still there, if and when budget allows i wouldn't be remotely surprised if it gets dusted off - however as ever there will be funding choices, if its a toss up between the 155 and getting the 16 additional VLS, the RN will choose the VLS...

The 127mm ends up with the Volcano rounds for example, but yeah I'd agree with the VLS getting more attention than the gun mount, I suppose if/when the 26's get into service they'll have the new gun?
again, if MOD/RN want to re-open the issue when the T45's start going into major refit then i imagine BAE will dust it off and from gossip its not something requiring 10 years and £5bn in development, but the new - and understandable - passion for off the shelf, not-buggering-about-with-it systems means that if they do upgun the T45's they'll go for the Mk45 5' gun - commonality will be the issue, and in truth the holy grail is guided munitions, 127 does that, so 155 isn't really neccesary.
