    Death of Lieut Gen O'Sullivan

    THE DEATH has taken place of Lieut Gen Gerry O’Sullivan, a former chief of staff of the Defence Forces.

    Lieut Gen O’Sullivan, who was born in 1923 in Dublin, dedicated his entire career to the Army, spending much of his service abroad serving on United Nations missions.

    He was awarded the Distinguished Service Medal for his work in Cyprus and he was also decorated by the Cypriot government for his humanitarian services.

    He was appointed chief of staff of the Defence Forces in April 1984, serving until his retirement in February 1986.

    Lieut Gen O’Sullivan died yesterday morning. He is survived by his wife Philomena and his son David, who is director general of the European Commission’s trade directorate.

    Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has. Margaret Mead

                "Fellow-soldiers of the Irish Republican Army, I have just received a communication from Commandant Pearse calling on us to surrender and you will agree with me that this is the hardest task we have been called upon to perform during this eventful week, but we came into this fight for Irish Independence in obedience to the commands of our higher officers and now in obedience to their wishes we must surrender. I know you would, like myself, prefer to be with our comrades who have already fallen in the fight - we, too, should rather die in this glorious struggle than submit to the enemy." Volunteer Captain Patrick Holahan to 58 of his men at North Brunswick Street, the last group of the Four Courts Garrison to surrender, Sunday 30 April 1916.

                        RIP

                        Another decent blokewho was a good boss gone
                        Things fall apart; the centre cannot hold;
                        Mere anarchy is loosed upon the world,
                        The blood-dimmed tide is loosed, and everywhere***
                        The ceremony of innocence is drowned;
                        The best lack all conviction, while the worst
                        Are full of passionate intensity.

                          Condolences to his family, friends and colleagues.

                          Rest in peace.
                          'He died who loved to live,' they'll say,
                          'Unselfishly so we might have today!'
                          Like hell! He fought because he had to fight;
                          He died that's all. It was his unlucky night.
