The success of the Illustrious type carrier was the option to swap engines with other ships in service, i.e Type 42. Otherwise, when engine overhaul or repairs are required, a frequent occurrence on Gas Turbines, the engine comes out and the ship is tied up, dead in the water.
Vince, Lusty and Ark all carried spare turbines, which were rotated between ships at frequent intervals.
Catch-22 says they have a right to do anything we can't stop them from doing.

Interesting US DOD Report into the F-35 Programme. Lots of work to do there yet.

@apc, the marine version will obviously develop enough power in it's own right, but purely from a core-minus-fan. Yes, it has the normal compressor at the front but no fan, which is the very wide front stage of the engine. Next time you go to the airport, have a look at the fan at the front of the jet engines. That's missing from marine engines because they don't need it. they most likely have an extra stage of compressor to make up the difference. here endeth the lesson.
