  • Looking for a good backpack.

I'm looking for a good backpack, ruck sack , bergin or whatever the hell you want to call it!

Need something with a good bit of lower back support and decent padding. I had the webtex ultimax for years and thats great but clips have finaly gone on it so time for a change!

I wanted to get a Lowe Alpine Saracen 120L in OD but nowhere seems to do them anymore.

Any other decent bags along the lines of the lowe alpine saracen?

Karrimor Sabre or Berghaus Vulcan maybe??

Vulcan is a good pack, Have one myself only real crit is that the webbing on the straps tends overtime flatten out the foam, which can be uncomfy with heavy loads
      But there's no danger
      It's a professional career
      Though it could be arranged
With just a word in Mr. Churchill's ear
If you're out of luck you're out of work

Did you try RVops or survival aids?
"Let us be clear about three facts. First, all battles and all wars are won in the end by the infantryman. Secondly, the infantryman always bears the brunt. His casualties are heavier, he suffers greater extremes of discomfort and fatigue than the other arms. Thirdly, the art of the infantryman is less stereotyped and far harder to acquire in modern war than that of any other arm." ------- Field Marshall Wavell, April 1945.

I havnt heard much about the sabre other than the video reviews (god bless those RVops lads, always on the ball).

Heard something similar about the vulkan turbo.

RGJ do you mean the old issue PLCE? I found that terrible. Very little lower back support / hip padding(carrying an injury and want a decent bag).

Raging ya cant get the lowe alpine anymore that was a class bit of kit!

yes mate i meant PLCE. i have a Berghaus Vulcan but i actually prefer my issued PLCE ShortBack and i have modified it with extra pouches and an extendable lid so that i can carry my daysack with radio in it etc. and then take it off when i dump my bergen.

perhaps you had the wrong back size when you had a PLCE bergen?

go to a decent shop that will let you load a bergen and tab around town for 15 mins with it at least, i did it in London with my Berghaus.

personal preference at the end of the day, as what is wonderful for some will be woeful for others.

Most comfortable bergen I ever had was the old US ALICE sack with external frame.

'He died who loved to live,' they'll say,
'Unselfishly so we might have today!'
                Like hell! He fought because he had to fight;
He died that's all. It was his unlucky night.

I agree RGJ, I find the PLCE bergen great, however there are a few issues:
                  - it is very hard to get a short back (designed for people under 6' 2")
                  - it is very hard to get OG (Brit DPM much easier to get)

I have one without frame, way too small and extremely uncomfortable!

i think the problem is that although they are great companies and deliver great kit, the likes of Lowe and Berghaus design the bergen to fit your average hillwalking civvie and don't take into account the fact that soldiers wear webbing, assault vests and body armour and need bigger straps with the bergen generally sitting much higher than on our civvie friends.

i'm sticking with my PLCE but i also know some old die hards who will still not give up their old Para Bergens:

I always thought the alice was too fat. It stuck out about 2 foot from your back when loaded, a nightmare if you needed to go to ground wearing it.
