  • How? Do you keep a fleet of aircraft on standby for ever? Realistically, impossible, so you make do if there is a crisis, by sharing other people's ships or aircraft or vehicles...

    • as with all things in life, if you want it, you pay for it.

      in the example given there would be many other countries looking to evacuate their citizens at the same time, so piggy-backing wouldn't be an insurmountable problem - but piggy-backing/sharing doesn't mean 'getting stuff for free', it means paying your share, but clubbing together to get more bang for your collective buck. so if 1000 citizens means chartering 4 A330 flights then so be it, thats what it costs. if you can club together with other friendly countries to get a better deal on 50-odd flights than you would on 4, great - but you would have to pay for those four charter flights...

      or buy some A330's at around €150m a piece, or C-17's at rather more...
