  • Cambrian Patrol 2011

Gentlemen, the Cambrian Patrol 2011 is just under 7 months away.

Those keen and green PDF and RDF soldiers among you should take this opportunity to get a team together and represent your unit in this arduous patrolling competition hosted by the British Army.

Exercise CAMBRIAN PATROL is the premier patrolling event of the British Army which is held in Wales and hosted by 160 (W) Brigade.

For 2011 it will run from 21 October until 30 October.

The exercise is held in Wales and is organised by HQ 160 (W) Brigade on behalf of HQ 5 Div, as directed by HQ Land in the Land Command Plan. Cambrian Patrol is arduous and concentrates on leadership, teamwork, physical fitness and achieving the mission. It also draws participants from foreign countries. The Cambrian Patrol is an exercise and not a competition. It is conducted for the benefit of units and there is no final order of merit. The exercise is designed to be within the capability of any well-led and well-trained patrol from any Arm or Service. The exercise is the same for Regular and Reserve Forces patrols.

    Aim

The aim of The Cambrian Patrol is to provide a challenging patrols exercise in order to develop operational capability.

    Applications

Units should apply using the application form which can be found in the Documents download panel on the right. Copies of the application should also be sent to the unit's Brigade or Divisional HQ. Units are welcome to bid to enter several teams, however, last minute withdrawals due to a failure to anticipate commitments or train adequately are extremely unwelcome and may prevent other units from participating.

Bids are to show preference for dates/phases. The closing date for bids will be 23 September 2011 and details confirming unit acceptance, timings, comprehensive rules and preliminary joining instructions will be issued after this date. Receipts of all bids will be acknowledged. The organisers' decision on allocation will be final. Reserve Forces units are to note that they must be prepared to report between 0400 hrs (earliest) and 1030 hrs (latest) on Friday 21 October 2011 or Friday 28 October 2011. Units must adhere to these timings. Exact timings for each unit will be contained in the warning order which will be issued nearer the date of deployment.

An entry fee of £60 per patrol made payable to 'HQ 160 (W) Bde Central Bank' should be enclosed with the application and is not refundable after the bid is accepted in August. Forms received without an entry fee will be returned. The entry fee for foreign teams is also £60, payable by UK cheque or by cash on arrival. (A contribution from these funds will be donated to the ABF The Soldiers' Charity if any monies are left over once all exercise expenses have been paid).

Foreign units are encouraged to enter teams on The Cambrian Patrol. There is a requirement for these teams to be hosted by British units. Wherever possible allied and affiliated units should be used. However, there may be a requirement for units on the same phase as foreign teams to assist with hosting if the above arrangement cannot be met.

All the documents you require to partake are attached.

You will be hosted by a British Army unit for the duration of the event and some time before.

Put your money where mouth is.

I've done it, now is your chance, you have 6 months to prepare

They could but permission would have be given by DCOS(Ops) if not COS.

We have had people do the Commando March with DCOS's approval. AFAIK all logs support was self-supplied (something like this would probably require more of a DF contribution).

I'm actually gonna get onto a few people in my Unit about getting a team together for this.

There'll be a Recce Course finishing up a month or two before the Cambrian Patrol will take place, so perfect time to get lads over.

as far as the British Army are concerned - YES you can submit a team from the RDF, and PDF.

they will be hosted by a British Army unit, living in their barracks / accommodation before the event.

it's a great military event, its tough, it's demanding and you will never forget it.

Have you done it before RGJ? If so, what did you think of it?

Hopefully my Unit will let me get this idea off the ground.

I`ve never been in this particular competition but I know lads who have been, by all accounts it a ball breaker..... but in a good way. Foreign countries do take part in the competion and some even do very well.

yes Alaska i have completed the Cambrian Patrol. i was a young Rifleman in Recce Platoon at the time.

it was no doubt one of the most arduous patrol events i ever did however it was also probably the most interesting and enjoyable as the scenario sees you as a section 'behind enemy lines' and the stands are very well put together by having to liaise with 'agents' as the patrol unfolds to find out what your next tasks and objectives are.

you can find yourself tabbing about 30K's every day in full CEMO and find yourself doing everything from ambushes to river crossings escorting a 'package' to heli-extractions to live fire defensive shoots - it all depends how the exercise unfolds.

i highly recommend it. a well motivated and fit team will do well, and if anything it is worth partaking just for the experience of the whole event alone which will definitely improve your individual and team soldier skills.

we were awarded a silver for our efforts, hampered by one of our men breaking his nose (no duff) whilst in contact on a cliff face.

                get yourselves on it.

Looks amazing..would take a LOT of work to get an RDF team up skilled to a level that would be sufficient to take a stab at it. Would also take a lot of co-operation from our brethren with black hats.

Well, the team is pretty much sorted.

Now to get the CO to go along with it

your CO shouldn't take too much convincing, it's a win win situation and an ideal opportunity to put your military skills to the test and there is no reason you can't walk out of there without some silverware for the Mess.

i mean it mate, best of luck to you and your team.

if you need any help with finding a British Army unit to host you then let me know.

Except it costs money and there are plenty of shredders between the CO and the Deputy Chief of Staff that has to give the ok.

What mess? There are no unit messes. If you attempted to put anything in a Barrack mess the laughter from the mess president would cause a new round of army deafness.
And the civvys who fill it would pay no attention anyway.

Catch-22 says they have a right to do anything we can't stop them from doing.

I'd love to have a crack at that! It would be something worth training for and I'd be confident that I could find 7 other individuals within the RDF capable of doing it too.
In an ideal scenario, I'd like to find a team and dedicate training for next year's Cambrian Patrol whilst seeking the relevant permissions this year.

Although, I'm finding with other things in the RDF that trying to achieve anything outside of your own unit is routinely met with resistance and the bureaucracy involved is probably more challenging than the patrol itself.

I'm sure if an RDF unit completed the patrol, it would raise a few eyebrows as well.
