  • Italian naval vessel joins UNIFIL’s MTF

UNIFIL’s Maritime Task Force (MTF) today inducted a new ship from Italy into its fleet. The ship 'Andrea Doria' is a multi-role vessel that comes with 237 Italian naval peacekeepers.

UNIFIL Force Commander Major-General Paolo Serra welcomed the arrival of the ship in a ceremony held at the port in Beirut in the presence of representatives of the Lebanese Armed Forces (LAF) as well as diplomats and officers from UNIFIL troop contributing countries.

Italy has been a significant contributor to UNIFIL Maritime Task Force (MTF) since its deployment in October 2006 to support the Lebanese Navy in preventing the unauthorized entry of arms or related material by sea into Lebanon as well as to provide training to the Lebanese Navy. Since 2006 Italy has contributed three times to UNIFIL Maritime Task Force and withdrew its naval force in 2010.

The Maritime Task Force was deployed at the request of the Lebanese government within the mandate of United Nations Security Council resolution 1701 (2006). The operational control of MTF has been delegated by UNIFIL Force Commander to the MTF Commander.

The MTF performs a dual mandate of carrying out maritime interdiction operations and providing training to the Lebanese Navy. Since the start of its operations on 15 October 2006, MTF has hailed around 54,156 ships and referred about 4,209 vessels to the Lebanese authorities for further inspections.

With today's addition to its fleet, UNIFIL-MTF now comprises nine naval units from Bangladesh (2 ships), Brazil (1 ship - Flag Ship), Germany (2 ships), Greece (1 ship), Indonesia (1 ship), Italy (1 ship) and Turkey (1 ship).

The exercise involved an aircraft on fire, sharing basic skills and developing a common doctrine in fire fighting.

      • Ready for action – but reduced force prepares for Lebanon

Defence Forces Mission Readiness Exercise of the 42nd Infantry Group, UNIFIL in the Glen of Imaal, Wicklow.

IRELAND'S contribution to the United Nations peacekeeping force in Lebanon will be almost halved from next month.

The Irish are currently operating alongside the Finns in a joint battalion there. But the next contingent of troops to be deployed there, the 42nd infantry group, will consist of only 181 personnel, compared with the current detachment of 330 troops.

The 42nd group will fly out to Lebanon at the end of next month, when operational control of the battalion will be handed over to the Finns, with the Irish boss, Lieut Col Ray Yorke, being appointed second-in-command.

In the meantime, the 181 troops are undergoing a week-long mission readiness exercise at the Glen of Imaal in west Wicklow.

About half of the troops are from Cathal Brugha barracks in Dublin and the rest are mainly from Dundalk.

The exercise is focusing on their armoured-force protection capabilities as well as patrolling, communications, medical and operational expertise.

They will operate close to the "blue line", which divides Lebanon from Israel.

        GOLAN HEIGHTS

But the reduction in strength in south Lebanon has meant that a company has been sent to the Golan Heights in Syria.

This has meant that during the current transitional period, the Defence Forces have about 550 personnel on duty overseas, the biggest deployment of peacekeeping troops abroad for several years.

Some of the equipment used in south Lebanon has also been transferred to the Golan Heights to meet Irish needs there.

I also heard some other good news although nothing officially so it possible may not be completely accurate.
The Finnish are having trouble filling their overseas vacancies for the Battalion they are meant to be sending out to Lebanon at the end of the month to take over from the Irish. The 108 Battalion's trip has already been extended by three weeks. If what I've heard is true a second Irish Company or a number of Platoon's will be sent to join the Irish-Finn Batt possibly in January.
That's the trouble a nation has when its mostly relying on reverses for overseas as Finland is.
