    "Ireland has participated in UN Peacekeeping since the 1950s. Today more than 400 Irish "Blue Helmets" serve in Lebanon. 3 peacekeepers describe their pride in serving their country and the United Nations."

    Probably a fudge due to the old story of NOT enough reserve/replacement flexibility in Standing Forces. We are a long way from 2 battalions in the Congo. With continued attrition, efforts will fall short in all spheres, ATCP, SAR, HADR, overseas missions will all be penny pinching and somewhat threadbare.

    Liberia

    Irish Bn minus (430 personnel with just 1 APC Coy and Cav Tp) with a Swedish Coy Gp (230 personnel)

    Chad
    2008-10
    Irish Bn minus (400 personnel) with Finnish Pln plus (60 personnel)

    It could be more to do with not having sufficient APCs and some key capabilities (eg MOs) being insufficient

    Wasn’t the whole DF something like 6,000-6,500 when there was 2 Irish Inf Bns (plus I think an Armd Car Sqn) in Congo?

    The comments underneath the story were less ths complimentary about Unifil. One was complaining that in 1982 Unifil soldiers were windsurfing and jogging...
    'He died who loved to live,' they'll say,
    'Unselfishly so we might have today!'
    Like hell! He fought because he had to fight;
    He died that's all. It was his unlucky night.

    In 1946 post Emergency ( the rest of the world called it WW11 ) the strength of the Defence Forces was reduced to 12,500 personnel with voluntary reserve elements and based on 3 Bde areas plus CTC , Aercorps , and Naval Service. The remainder at home when the 2 Bns + were in the Congo could have been around 6,500. Since 1924 the control of the PDF has been held in a containment structure with establishments been subject to annual permissable strengths as a percentage of that establishment. Losing a Bde and closing Mil Bks is retarding concepts of developing efficient forces especially if the powers that be see no threat and see no responsibility to aid a neighbours threat.
