Young Irish Jews also go and do their military service in Israeli. so a certain level of Irish speaker not that hard to recruit.
I sincerely hope Irish Officers were not that silly to think they could get away with speaking Irish to fool Jews in the Leb, Congo was a different matter

It was a cock story then and it’s still a story that’s full of shite now,
I’ve a few Leb trips and we never had the need to use Irish over the radio. If we needed to send classified information we had slidex and griddle.Things fall apart; the centre cannot hold;
Mere anarchy is loosed upon the world,
The blood-dimmed tide is loosed, and everywhere***
The ceremony of innocence is drowned;
The best lack all conviction, while the worst
Are full of passionate intensity.

First, all battles and all wars are won in the end by the infantryman. Secondly, the infantryman always bears the brunt. His casualties are heavier, he suffers greater extremes of discomfort and fatigue than the other arms. Thirdly, the art of the infantryman is less stereotyped and far harder to acquire in modern war than that of any other arm." ------- Field Marshall Wavell, April 1945.

This year marks the 40th anniversary of the deployment of Irish troops to Lebanon, where peace is still fragile. pic.twitter.com/sAzw1r7EDw

It will be interesting to see if there will now be a full Irish Battalion overseas for the first time since 2012, if the Government/DoD will allow it.
Finland has announced earlier this year that its current national mandate for participation in the Irish-Finnish Battalion in UNIFIL will end on 31 December 2018 and will not be renewed. Finland will therefore withdraw from Irish/Battalion by the end of the year. Ireland is committed to continuing participation in the UNIFIL mission and is currently considering the options that are available. These include the option to backfill positions by deploying additional Irish personnel. Another option is to identify a partner country to replace the Finnish contingent and discussions are on-going in this regard.

Armoured Scanias due to be delivered this year will fill that gap.
Not much else the Finns have that cant be replaced.
The leasing option is interesting. Might embarrass the Government enough to put in an order for more Mowags but unlikely.

Don't worry.There is no way they will leave the saunas behind.Or the PX."Let us be clear about three facts. First, all battles and all wars are won in the end by the infantryman. From what I have heard the Czechs need a longer lead in time to be in a position to provide a Coy+.
The latest seems to be a full Irish BN of approx 440. Truth be told there is many duplicate appointments in the cells which aren't required reducing the need for officers and SNCOs.
Many rumours including a 3 Chalk 113 BN where the first chalk take over 6-50 prior to the Finn Contingent withdrawing mid November. A full Irish BN could be required for 113 and 114.
The leasing of comms equipment etc including SISUs is on the table.
Is there enough specialist personnel to cover a Coy+ in UNDOF and a BN in UNIFIL for 12 months in addition to all of the smaller missions. It will be difficult particularly if those who are only back a short time are targeted again.
It should be a lot clearer by August/September.Last edited by Chuck; 8 June 2018, 07:06.
