  • Having seen the original, you look like such a rapist in the above
I knew a simple soldier boy.....
Who grinned at life in empty joy,
Slept soundly through the lonesome dark,
And whistled early with the lark.

In winter trenches, cowed and glum,
With crumps and lice and lack of rum,
He put a bullet through his brain.
And no one spoke of him again.

You smug-faced crowds with kindling eye
Who cheer when soldier lads march by,
Sneak home and pray you'll never know
The hell where youth and laughter go.

            NEVER!!

I don't drink, smoke, or partake in any other team orientated sports. So Gucci kit is my vice.

That's kind of sad- at least tell us you crack one off looking at the silvermans catalogue
              Things fall apart; the centre cannot hold;
Mere anarchy is loosed upon the world,
The blood-dimmed tide is loosed, and everywhere***
              The ceremony of innocence is drowned;
The best lack all conviction, while the worst
              Are full of passionate intensity.

Silverman's? Pah! They're the Gucci kit version of high class hookers who are too posh to give head. Expensive, leaving you with little to be proud about after the transaction.

Here's a bit of kit porn to fap yourself silly to.......

I do play squash and golf (badly), but that does make me sound a bit snobby.

                • The more pouches you have, the more you find to fill them!remember that Bergens tend to spend alot of theit time getting flung into and out of TCV's etc and most of the time they end up on their front or back.Rarely upright unless you have switched on Sgts or Q staff who know how to "wardrobe" Bergens.
This is why it is a bad idea to place anything breakable in a front pouch IE Waterbottles,Jetboils etc. These are better kept inside sidepockets or in the patrol pack. When I had the PLCE Bergen i used to keep my Basha and 6 metal tent pegs stored inside a BA issue drawstring basha pouch in the front pocket. That kept the wet basha(if it rained) away from any dry items.I also knew where to find it in a hurry.
Suggestion: Swifty try a single utility pouch on the lower front for your basha kit.Place your E-tool beside it.Place another utility pouch on the other side.Use that for your Goretex pants.(Jacket in the patrol pack)

Oh,almost forgot. The furthur away from your back you pack a load,EG on the front of the Bergen, the heavier it makes the load to carry as it is away from your centre of gravity.
"Let us be clear about three facts. First, all battles and all wars are won in the end by the infantryman. Secondly, the infantryman always bears the brunt. His casualties are heavier, he suffers greater extremes of discomfort and fatigue than the other arms. Thirdly, the art of the infantryman is less stereotyped and far harder to acquire in modern war than that of any other arm." ------- Field Marshall Wavell, April 1945.

                  • If you've managed to fill all 6 outer pouches, what in the name of jaysus are you putting in your side pouches and patrol pack?

                    Comment

                    • Sterling advice as always Apod. I only really packed 3 pouches HA, which is why I'm looking towards a poncho pouch solution.

I was conscious of the weight imbalance by having too much gear at the front. Water and Rations were the most densely weighted items I had in the front, things like wash kit, basha kit, twine/para cord were a lot more evenly spread. Where there was any void of space in the main pack with my daysack in, I'd pull in the side retention straps to bring the front further to the back.
I've kept the Jetboil in my daysack, as I'd rather have it with me away from my pack. Plus, as you rightly pointed out, I won't trust the lads to treat my bergan with any respect when loading up 4 tonners and alike.
I suppose the concept of it is to be able to conduct most of my admin in the field (wash kit/rations/paracord/twine for track plan etc) from the front of the pack. And it worked reasonably well on a recent Ex. But I might scale back the rations to the 'next meal +' on the front, and keep the main stock(weight) in the main pack or side pouch.
I had nothing packed into the side pouches but kept them on for the time being.
It's trial and error at the moment. If I could, I'd love to jump on a couple of 48/72 Exs just to test and adjust. Unfortunately, career courses aside, they're few and far between these days.
I got to try the PDF issue Saracen bergan recently, and it was the perfect fit for my chest rig. The weight distribution to the hips is great! And I could MOLLE on a water bottle to the belt. It's a shame that I can't have an Irish issued bergan within the Irish Army, but a British Army bergan is fine. Go figure.

                      • The thing is you CAN have an Irish issue Bergen. It' called OG PLCE.You just WANT something better.

Yep, because if what we had was so fecking good, you boys would still have it

Besides, even in the medieval times soldiers would look up at knights with envy for their Gucci armour and weapons, and would later pillage the dead in search of better equipment, hopefully from those smarmy fallen Knights.

If it's better, lighter, inflicts more damage, increases performance, or even just shiny, Gucci kit fiends will want it. It's nature. Who am I to fight it?

Nothing wrong with PLCE.Perfect for the use it gets in the RDF.We would still have it only it wasn't compatible with the new CBA or with the seats in the Mowags and AW139's.Some of my mates still pine for the old belt kit in fact.

                            • I'm not against belt kits at all, in fact, as I said before, if I could start again, I'd probably go for a MOLLE belt + patrol yoke solution. I'm not even anti PLCE. I had a quality modified DPM PLCE belt kit in the BA for a while, with a hippo pad/QR yoke/hook&loop ammo pouches etc. But I just don't like the Old OG PLCE, it's the brass fixings and the tattered state most of it is in these days that puts me off it, that's just me though.

One thing I was wondering about, on career courses (namely PNCOs), I know the lads have to wear PLCE, but are they just restricted to what they're issued? i.e. 2x ammo, 1x water bottle, 1x utility pouch, 1x Ressie pouch. Or can they use their own pouches/mods too - extra water/utility pouches, hippo pads etc? Does it even need to be strictly OG PLCE? Can you get away with an OG belt kit similar to this...?
