It seems to be something Irish academia have problems with generally.

It may be better if UCC, CIT and NMCI offered more research Masters and PhD programmes in martime technologies that are funded and ideal funded by industry (ie they do the R&D for the business).

    • From what I can see, the best of those involved in IMERC have over the last few years moved the the UCC Beaufort facility and MarEI or CIT's Halpin Centre.
For now, everything hangs on implementation of the CoDF report.

Navies are at their best doing their day job. R&D is a minefield of research and funding raising. Reflected glory is available and so also is doo-doo, when it hits the fan. We need to balance our paths of progress.

Have a look what they were trying to get out of it

Leveraging NS tech expertise and experience
In addition, it was a chance for NS personnel to Upskill and for the taxpayer to indirectly support industry (eg using an NS vessel as an R&D platform).

It had the potential to create a lot of jobs and assist retention and funding of the NS.

Certainly aspirational but The Irish Examiner quotes criticism of how things were run including weak supervision, planning and disbursement of funds. In all cases in the future oversight may be a predominant requirement.

So like the rest of the Irish 3rd level sector then

              • And with that IMERC is no more. I understand the Halpin Centre has taken over most of the projects that begun in IMERC, but I am open to correction.
The Irish Naval Service (INS) was disappointed by the decision of UCC and Cork Institute of Technology to shut down earlier this year a maritime research facility on which the three collaborated.

                • Only when Senior Officers retire does the truth come out in relation to the politics that go on at the DoD.

                  • Interestingly (as the facilities are a PPP), NMCI is going to be part of Munster Technological University

I thought (incorrectly) it had been set up with CIT rather than remaining part of it
