Slightly off thread, but on the heading of the NS showing us how it's done...
"The Naval Service patrols the 15% of EU waters that are under Irish sovereign control.
In the past five years the Naval Service has also intercepted €1.7bn worth of drugs in Irish waters.
It has carried out 757 boardings and made eight detentions so far this year. Last year, it carried out 1,264 boardings and made 10 detentions."
Numbers looking good!!

Dev- Ireland could, and should, have a Navy 2-4 times its present size if the politicians had not fallen for the big con job of the EU Common Fishing Policy. Iceland and Norway have much to teach Ireland in this respect.
It is clear that the policy of common fishing, as that of common farming, leads to lack of conservation. Witness how Iceland and Norway are conserving their cod and other fish resources.
The capitulation of Ireland on the common fishing policy will have consequences far more dire than the consequences of the banking bail-out. These are the two great scandals of our time. Iceland was right both on Banking and Fisheries.
Interesting paper here from an Icelandic and Norwegian perspective:-

I watched an episode of 'Trawlermen' recently on Sky, a series about Scottish trawlers.
One boat was targetting haddock, but caught a large catch of coalie instead.
They already had their quota of coalie, so the fish went over the side, hundreds of them, dead.
Senseless...but not the fishermens fault.'History is a vast early warning system'. Norman Cousins
